Our 100 Black Men chapters are taking the lead in teaching our mentees about their past through our African-American History Challenge (AAHC) program. Whether your chapter teaches African American History via the AAHC program or as a foundational component of your regular mentoring program, we thank you. 100 Black Men of America, Inc. (100 BMOA) implemented the AAHC as an innovative, relevant, and exciting way for our mentees to learn about the trials and triumphs of their ancestors. Knowledge is indeed power! As our students learn for themselves, the facts about the roles and contributions of their ancestors, to the building and growth of America, they will be empowered to reverse the ignorance previously taught and reject any future erroneous teachings. Haven’t we all come to eventually question our elementary instruction about the discovery of

America? When did you first ask yourself, “How could Columbus discover a land that was already occupied by Native Americans?” Our 100 Black Men mentors, volunteers, and stakeholders in our chapter network are helping to develop the next generation of critical and global thinkers. The African-American History Challenge program is just one way our chapters use friendly competition to promote the love of history and help our youth link the relevancy of that knowledge to the current trends and events of today. Through this AAHC vehicle, our mentees not only gain knowledge, but they change their assumptions about racism, slavery, education, equity, and opportunity in the United States. The great historian and author of “The Mis-Education of the Negro, Carter G. Woodson, is credited for advocating and promoting the scholarly study of our African-American history for the benefit of our communities. Similarly, our beloved 100 member, the late Brace B. Godfrey, Jr, is responsible for

infusing the study of African-American history into the programmatic initiatives of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. The AAHC is the brainchild of Brother Godfrey and his dream of empowering our mentees with the knowledge of their rich history lives today. As you launch your local AAHC youth programs in preparation for the 2019 Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, remember, the ultimate goal is to empower our mentees with relevant knowledge that will impact their lives, their chapters, their communities, and the world. To that end, please take note of the AAHC Competition requirements: Chapters are responsible for identifying creative solutions for recognizing program participants/winners at the local level who are NOT chapter mentees. However, students advancing to compete at the National level MUST BE CHAPTER MENTEES. Chapters will be required to submit a statement certifying that Competition participants are indeed 2018-2019 chapter mentees who are/have been a part of the chapter’s

The program was started in 1995 under the leadership of the late Brace B. Godfrey, Jr, founding Chapter President of 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Inc. and a former member of the Board of Directors of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. The AAHC is an education and scholarship program designed to: 1) enhance and/or ignite the study of AfricanAmerican history among youth, and 2) increase their interest in knowing and better understanding the legacy left for them by our African-American ancestors.

Since its inception, the AAHC National Competition has become the signature youth event of our Annual Conference. Please carefully read all the information contained in this manual as it will guide your Chapter and its mentees through the competition process. As you will note on the 2019 program schedule herein, conference calls have been planned to discuss the AAHC (see page 12). However, should any general questions or concerns arise before or after those scheduled calls, do not hesitate to contact the World Headquarters of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. I. 2019 AAHC COMPETITION BOOK The authority for the 2019 AAHC Competition is the new history book by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. titled, 100 Amazing Facts About the Negro. “With élan and eruditionand with winning enthusiasmHenry Louis Gates, Jr. gives us a corrective yet loving homage to Joel Augustus Rogers’s work. Relying on the latest scholarship, Gates leads us on a romp through African, diasporic, and African-American history

in question-and-answer format.” Book: 100 Amazing Facts About the Negro | Publisher: Pantheon (October 24, 2017) | ISBN-10: 0307908712 | ISBN-13: 978-0307908711| Book Venues: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Hudson Booksellers, IndieBound, Powell’s, Target, Walmart, and Penguin Random House Chapters are strongly encouraged to place orders for the AAHC Competition book as soon as possible to ensure participants have sufficient time to study during their local competitions. World Headquarters will provide all 2019 participating chapters with three (3) copies of the book. II. 2019 AAHC OVERVIEW In June 2019, 100 Black Men of America, Inc. will host the African American History Challenge National Competition. The Preliminary Rounds will occur on Thursday, June 13th during the 33rd Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Championship Competition will be held on Friday, June 14th during the 33rd Annual Conference in conjunction with the State Farm Dollars and $ense

Youth Competition. Both competitions will be merged into one main Championship Competition. Each team in the National Competition will compete in one of the two divisions as established. Each team will comprise of two students. An alternate student, selected by the chapter in the event of an illness or any other emergency, may replace either student. Each team will be allowed to have coaches and/or other assistants; however, all coaching and other assistance must be given outside of and away from any room in which competition is taking place. Coaches, assistants, and players must keep the competition room and areas free of all books and materials associated with preparation for the competition. 5 Source: http://doksi.net OVERVIEW (continued) The National Competition begins with a series of elimination rounds designed to provide two finalists teams in each division. Each elimination round will be announced to the participating chapters and will be held at a designated time against a

specified competing chapter. Only one chapter will proceed in the African American History Challenge Competition after an elimination round. The team that does not win will have completed its participation in the National Competition. During the elimination rounds, each team will be paired for a first-round challenge. Subsequent elimination rounds will continue until two teams in each division remains. For any round including, the opening round, where an odd number of entries exist, the AAHC Committee Chair, Mr. Alvin Cavalier, and Co-Chair, Mr James Miller, will determine the pairing of entries and the granting of byes. In the midst of our Annual Conference, it will be essential that chapters’ contestants and officials follow the instructions and directives to the letter. Time will be of the essence and all failures not attributable to the management of the AAHC Competition will result in the forfeiture of the offending party. It is advisable, but not mandatory, that each chapter

considers including an alternate team member, in case of an emergency. The ruling of forfeiture shall remain at the sole discretion of the AAHC Committee Chair and Co-Chair, with the guidance and oversight of the Education Committee Co-Chairs, Dr. Floyd Rose and Dr Joseph Silver No appeal whatsoever shall be heard with regards to a decision of the AAHC Committee once the Education Committee Co-Chairs have rendered an opinion. During the two-week period prior to the Annual Conference, the official chapter representatives of each entry team will be informed of the day and time of the orientation session. Any entry team that misses the orientation session will be allowed to compete; however, the session will not be repeated, and the entry team will be held responsible for all information provided or discussed. If at the end of the elimination round, exact information on succeeding rounds is not available, the advancing team will be instructed to consult the AAHC Committee Chair and

Co-Chair for updated information. The orientation session shall be held prior to the start of the Preliminary Rounds, and the actual AAHC Competition shall begin immediately following the orientation session, unless otherwise noted. It is essential that participating 100 Black Men chapters arrange to have their entry teams at the Annual Conference venue and prepared to compete on the first day of the 33rd Annual Conference. During the Preliminary Rounds, the two (2) participating students and the one (1) alternate student will only be allowed in the competition room. No other student will be permitted to attend the Preliminary Rounds. All non-competing chapter mentees must attend all Conference Youth Workshops!!! Parents, coaches, and chapter members can attend the Preliminary Rounds with their participating students. Cheating is strictly prohibited in the African-American History Challenge competition! Any team that is caught cheating or playing unfairly in any manner shall be

immediately dismissed from the competition, and its sponsoring chapter shall not be allowed to send a team in either division to the next year’s National Competition. Biography sheets on each player, along with a valid picture/student ID, must be provided to the competition officials upon entry into the competition room (see page 14). This regulation will be strictly enforced! III. CHAPTER CONTEST AND CHAMPIONSHIP Each eligible and approved 100 Black Men chapter may enter one team in each division for participation in their local competition. In order for a team to be qualified for the National Competition, the chapter must provide the proper notices to World Headquarters within the established and required deadlines. Although World Headquarters does not control local competitions or procedures for determining local champions, in order for a chapter’s team to qualify for the National Competition, its mentees must have prevailed in some process or competition at the local level

that involves the demonstration of knowledge of African-American history. Your World Headquarters’ staff strongly advises that each chapter actually conducts a local competition that includes the oral recitation of responses. However, if a chapter chooses to conduct a written competitive examination, its qualified youth team will be accepted for the National Competition. 6 Source: http://doksi.net CHAPTER CONTEST AND COMPETITION (continued) Many chapters have used and will continue to use commercial board games designed to test their students’ knowledge of African-American history. This remains an acceptable method of determining a qualified 100 Black Men chapter team for the National Competition. Chapters are encouraged to urge students to read the book that serves as the authority for the National Competition (see page 6). However, each chapter is free to design its own team preparation method Much of the information involved in the AAHC Competition is available from other

sources. Please note; however, that the acceptance of a correct response to a question is at the sole discretion of the competition officials, and the authorized book for the National Competition will be used to settle any disputes or challenges. IV. THE NATIONAL COMPETITION A. GENERAL INFORMATION 1. The African-American History Challenge is a national program of 100 Black Men of America Inc The only means of entry into the competition is through one of the approved and qualified local chapters of 100 BMOA. 2. Students who are selected to participate in the National Youth Competition of 100 Black Men of America, Inc MUST be chapter mentees. 3. Each chapter of the organization is authorized to act independently in conceiving and designing the system, procedure, or contest by which the chapter determines which of its CHAPTER MENTEES will represent the team for National Competition (see page 4). 4. The National Competition is under the strict and exclusive control of the National body

through the AAHC Chair and Co-Chair. 5. All chapters should ensure their local students are aware of all requirements and guidelines regarding the representation of only our chapter mentees on the National Competition teams. 6. Chapters should also ensure mentee representatives, chaperones, guests, etc are aware of the values and mission of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. prior to the Annual Conference and uphold the organization’s values and mission during the Conference. B. COMPETITION FORMAT AND DIVISIONS 1. The African-American History Challenge consists of two divisions of competition: • The Junior Division includes teams of two students who have not yet entered the 9th grade. • The Senior Division includes teams of two students who are in grades 9-12, but whose graduation from high school shall not be earlier than January of the year of the applicable competition. 2. Each 100 Black Men Chapter will be allowed only one team per division and one additional student per

team to serve only as an alternate in case one of the competing students cannot participate due to unforeseen circumstances. COMPETITION RULES OF ENGAGEMENT Chapters are responsible for identifying creative solutions for recognizing program participants/winners at the local level who are NOT Chapter mentees. have participated in the African American History Challenge competitions in previous years cannot participate in the same division again if they have previously advanced from Round One (1) of the Preliminary Rounds; except for student alternates who did not actually compete before. Students who did not advance from Round One (1) of the Preliminary Rounds can compete again. 2. Method of play – The competition will begin with a set of preliminary-round questions to assist teams in engaging the answering device, as well as to familiarize the teams with the types of questions to be asked. ¨ During the preliminary round, each correct answer will be worth five points, with no deduction of points for an incorrect response. After the preliminary round, each correct response will be worth five (5) points as explained herein, with a deduction of one (1) point for an incorrect response. ¨ Each team member will have access to a device that will indicate to AAHC Competition Chair that the team

desires to answer the question. The AAHC Competition Chair will recognize the first team to engage the device. ¨ Each team will have five (5) seconds to provide a satisfactory answer to any questions posed during the rounds. The correctness of the responses shall be at the sole judgment and discretion of the AAHC Competition Chair, with no appeal. ¨ If a team indicates its desire to answer a question before the AAHC Competition Chair finishes a question in its entirety, the Competition Chair will cease reading the question at that point, and the team must provide a response within the time allotted. ¨ A team will receive a total of five (5) points for a correct answer in the regulation round of play. In tie-breaker rounds, one (1) point shall be awarded for a correct response ¨ Except in the first round, if the first team attempting to answer provides an incorrect answer, or no answer is given within the time allotted, one (1) point will be deducted. (A team’s total can be a

negative number as a result.) The other team will then have five (5) seconds to provide an answer, if the opportunity is desired. The team in that situation will be penalized one (1) point for an incorrect answer but will not be penalized if no answer is attempted. ¨ Whether an answer given by any team is deemed acceptable, will be at the sole discretion of the AAHC Competition Chair and Co-Chair at the time the answer is given. There will be no appeal beyond the ruling of the competition officials at the time the answer is given. 8 Source: http://doksi.net D. DETERMINATION OF WINNERS ¨ There will be one (1) round of play in addition to the preliminary round in the elimination phase. Each round will consist of a predetermined set of questions and will begin by the oral presentation of a question to both teams. The competition official will indicate the beginning and end of each round of questions. ¨ Each elimination contest will proceed until the conclusion of the presentation

of questions. ¨ The declaration that a game has been completed shall remain at the sole discretion of the AAHC Competition Chair and Co-Chair. When they indicate that all questions have been presented, or that the time has elapsed, the game will then be declared complete. ¨ At the time of completion of an elimination round, the team with the highest number of points will be declared eligible to move on past the elimination round, and the competition for the other team will have ended. ¨ If at the time the game is declared completed and the score is tied, the teams will be presented a question as a tie-breaker in the same manner as the main competition. This process will continue until one team presents a correct answer. The team will then be declared the winner of the AAHC Competition. During the tie-breaker process, there will be no deduction for an incorrect response. E. THE CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION The Championship Competition of each division will take place as part of the

agenda of the Annual Conference. The World Headquarters’ Event Team shall establish the exact time, date, and place, in conjunction with the Programs Department. Only the two teams that have survived the elimination rounds in each division will participate in the Championship Competition; however, all participants of the Preliminary Rounds will be acknowledged for their participation during the Championship Competition. The Championship Competition will last no longer than 45 minutes for each division. Regardless, the end of the competition on the basis of time or the completion of the questions shall be determined at the sole discretion of the AAHC Competition Chair. The format of the questions and the requirements of the answer will be the same as in the elimination rounds. Only the length of the game will change Of course, the fact that the contestants will perform before the convention audience in the Championship Competition will be different, and the AAHC Competition Chair will

give due consideration to this fact in administering the game. F. ROLE OF PROGRAMS/COMMITTEE The World Headquarters’ Events Team and designated representatives responsible for the development and execution of each Annual Conference of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. are ultimately responsible for assuring the proper placement of the AAHC Competition on the conference agenda and assuring access to necessary equipment and facilities for the Preliminary Rounds and Championship Competition. This effort of course will be closely coordinated with the World Headquarters’ staff in charge of the AAHC Competition. The Programs Department and AAHC Committee Chair and Co-Chair should assure that at least six reliable, adult volunteers are secured specifically for this competition. These volunteers shall be persons particularly interested in the competition, and shall include educators, if at all possible. 9 Source: http://doksi.net G. AWARDS The tradition of “The 100 Cup” in the Senior

Division was established during the 1995 Annual Conference when the team representing 100 Black Men of New Jersey, Inc. was victorious Up until 2016, the reigning Championship chapter would proudly display “The 100 Cup” until it was surrendered to the Competition Chair at the succeeding conference venue. It was then taken home by the new Senior Division chapter champions. Likewise, the tradition of “The Hayling Cup,” named for the first National President of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., Dr William Hayling, began in 1996 The chapter with the victorious Junior Division team claimed this award. The Madison, Wisconsin Chapter was the first winner of this cup Up until 2016, the reigning Championship chapter would also proudly display the “Hayling Cup” until it was surrendered to the Competition Chair at the succeeding conference venue. It was then taken home by the new Junior Division chapter champions. At the 2016 National Competition, the reigning Championship chapters

surrendered “The 100 Cup” and “The Hayling Cup” over to the AAHC Competition Chair and received a 2015 African American History Challenge Junior Division trophy and a Senior Division trophy to take home permanently. The 2016 Champions also received a Junior Division trophy and a Senior Division trophy to keep. To date, the Championship chapters will receive a Junior Division trophy and Senior Division trophy to permanently display. The competitors will also receive various versions of “The 100 Medallion” The ultimate victors will receive “The V (for victory) Medallion.” All finalists will receive “The 100 Knowledge Medallion,” and all competitors will receive “The 100 Academic Medal” for their participation in the National Competition. At the National Competition, each mentee competitor will receive additional awards. The awards will be based upon the level of sponsor funding. H. QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS Any questions or concerns regarding procedures occurring

during the National Competition or the determination of winners should be submitted in writing via email to Dr. Rose, Dr Silver, Mr Cavalier, Mr. Miller, and Programs Departmental staff The inquiry will be reviewed by the appropriate leaders to determine an appropriate response, if warranted. If necessary, the CEO and/or Chairman of the Board may be consulted prior to responding to the inquiry. No response will be given to verbal questions, concerns, or complaints. Concerns submitted in writing will be reviewed and the final decision will be communicated directly to the chapter’s President or his designee. 10 Source: http://doksi.net I. PARTICIPATION AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS Each 100 Black Men chapter that desires to have a team qualify for and participate in the National Competition must comply with the following requirements and deadlines: A. Notification to Participate - Each chapter shall notify the World Headquarters of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. of its intent to

conduct a local competition and qualify a local championship team comprised of chapter mentees for the National Competition. The chapter shall complete and submit the Notification to Participate Form to World Headquarters by March 1, 2019 (see page 13). B. Official Registration - Each Chapter shall complete and submit the AAHC Registration Form to World Headquarters by May 1, 2019 (see pages 15-16). This form must include the names of the chapter mentee team members who will compete in the National Competition and the chapter representatives/chaperones. C. Chapter Representatives/Chaperones - The role of the chapter representatives and/or chaperones is twofold: 1) accept specific responsibility for the chapter’s team in terms of complying with AAHC Competition requirements and appearances; and 2) provide supervision for the mentee participants to ensure their welfare and safety. D. Youth Security Packets – Each chapter shall be responsible for securing and submitting all documents

required in the Student/Chaperone Security Packets to World Headquarters by May 1, 2019. These time requirements are rigid and absolutely NO exceptions will be granted!!! If the March 1st and May 1st deadline requirements are not met, the chapter and its team shall be; without exception, declared ineligible for the 2019 National Competition. II. INFORMATIONAL CONFERENCE CALLS There will be at least three conference calls prior to the Annual Conference to provide information to chapters that are interested in entering teams in the National Competition. The calls will also provide the AAHC Committee Chair and Co-Chair an opportunity to share updates and answer questions. Keep in mind that these calls are informational only! They are not designed to address concerns and complaints that must be submitted in writing (refer to page 11). The conference calls are very beneficial, but not mandatory for teams to compete.
