Specifically, it examines how and why the policies of the mainstream parties (Conservative, Labour and the Liberal Democrats) have been affected by ideas and ideologies, on the one hand, and political pragmatism, on the other. It also explores the ideas and ideologies of minor parties and ‘new social movements’ and their role and significance for the study and practice of politics in Britain today. Educational Aims: By the end of the module, students should have acquired:  Knowledge and understanding of debates about the nature, role and ultimate significance of ideas and ‘ideology’ in British politics;  Enhanced knowledge and understanding of the ideas

and ideologies of British political parties and ‘new social movements’;  An ability to explain and assess the changing nature, role and significance of political ideas and ideologies in Britain today. Learning Outcomes: In addition to the above, students will acquire the following intellectual, practical and transferable skills:  An enhanced ability to read critically and apply in practice primary and secondary source materials;  Enhanced oral, presentation and communication skills;  Enhanced data collection and time-management skills.
