Rapid growth continues beyond age 1 and nutrition plays a very important role. From about 6 months, neither human breast milk nor infant formula milk intake alone are enough to meet their needs. Introducing solid foods, known as weaning, is essential for continued growth and development. Over time, their feeding skills improve and teeth arrive increasing the variety and texture of foods your baby is capable of managing. By age 1, most babies are able to enjoy feeding themselves a wide variety of family foods. A suspicion of food allergy during this time can be worrying and confusing; this booklet aims to address these fears. A diagnosis of Cows’ Milk Protein Allergy can present you with many challenges: what’s best to

feed my baby, when to start weaning and what weaning foods are suitable? This booklet aims to provide you with practical help and guidance. Human breast milk is the preferred fuel for growth. For the first 6 months of life babies including those with food allergy ideally should only receive breast milk. If however you have made an informed decision to bottle feed your baby then a hypoallergenic formula, such as Neocate LCP, should be given. Most healthy babies do not need any solid food before 17 weeks of age. When your baby is ready and from about 6 months they will start to show a greater interest in food and will be ready to start weaning. Neither breast milk nor Neocate LCP alone can meet these needs and “solid” food becomes essential. This is a time where your baby learns new skills that encourage development. It is a gradual process that introduces your baby to new tastes and textures and eventually onto “family” foods. It will be important to avoid all contact with

cows’ milk protein during this time. Avoiding cows’ milk in childhood is a major nutritional concern. Excluding an entire food group (milk and dairy products) can have serious repercussions on vulnerable developing bones and needs careful consideration and planning. You will also need to discuss with your healthcare professional (HCP) whether you need to avoid goat milk and soy milk. There is a high risk of reacting to these foods with Cows’ Milk Protein Allergy.
