IMPROPER INSTALLATION MAY RESULT IN EQUIPMENT DAMAGE AND VOID THE

WARRANTY. Surface And Pad Requirements: 1. Your new spa MUST BE PLACED ON A UNIFORMLY FIRM AND LEVEL SURFACE The only pad foundation recommended is a concrete pad at least 4 inches thick. As an alternative, a pea-gravel foundation pad may be used, but it must be on a firm, level base and it must be contained with a secure wood or concrete restraining border so that the loose gravel cannot shift once the spa is in place. Ensure the concrete has cured for at least one week before setting the spa in place. A typical spa, filled with water, could weigh as much as two and a half tons, and if the concrete is not fully cured, it could easily crack. AN UNEVEN OR CRACKED PAD OR THE USE OF SHIMS OF ANY KIND MAY CAUSE THE SPA TO BUCKLE, DISTORT AND/OR CRACK AND WILL VOID THE WARRANTY ON YOUR SPA. 2. If your spa is located near water sprinklers, adjust or cap them so the water will not hit the wood cabinet of the spa. 3. Balconies and decks must be constructed to current state and local codes

to safely support the maximum load of your water filled spa and the number of people using the spa. Check with your construction contractor for these specifications. 4. Gates must be self-closing and self-locking Check your local codes regarding fences and gates 5. It is the responsibility of the owner to provide clear access on all sides of the spa Otherwise, additional costs to service and repair the spa may be incurred. 6. Install to provide drainage of compartments for electrical components to keep water out of electrical equipment. Water should always drain away from the spa Also install to permit access for servicing. –8– Electrical Installation Requirements: IMPROPER INSTALLATION MAY RESULT IN EQUIPMENT DAMAGE AND VOID THE WARRANTY 1. We strongly recommend that only a licensed and bonded electrician perform the electrical installation Improper electrical connections could damage the equipment, harm a person or an animal, and possibly cause fire!! 2. It is the

responsibility of the spa owner to ensure that electrical connections are made by a qualified electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code and any local and state electrical codes in force at the time of the installation. These connections must be made in accordance with the wiring diagrams found inside the control box and the wiring diagrams within this manual. 3. This equipment has been designed to operate on 240 volts, 60 Hz alternating current ONLY 4. Make sure that NO POWER is applied while performing any electrical installation 5. A bonding lug has been provided on the electrical equipment pack to allow connection to local grounded points. The ground wire must be at least No 8 AWG and must be connected securely to a grounded metal structure such as a cold water pipe. 6. Input Power Wiring and Circuit Breaker Selection: Spa System Wire Size (up to 100 ft.) Circuit Breaker Dual pump & blower No. 6 AWG Dual 60 amps with GFCI (Neutral load required) Single

pump / Single pump & blower / Dual pump No. 8 AWG Dual 50 amps with GFCI (Neutral load required) A. A JUMPER for MODE SELECT is set at “50A” by the manufacturer to allow the user to operate the spa with a 50-or 60-ampere circuit breaker. Do not change the setting without the manufacturer’s authorization Refer to wiring diagrams inside the spa control box or in this manual for more details. Save and follow all safety instructions provided by the GFCI manufacturer. A disconnect switch must be located where visible, not less than 5 feet from the spa and not to exceed 50 feet from the spa. B. The JUMPER for MODE SELECT can be set at “20A” by a qualified electrician to allow the user to operate the spa with a 30-ampere circuit breaker. (CAUTION: Shut down the power to the spa before you change the jumper setting) A dual 30-ampere circuit breaker with GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) must be used in the electrical power distribution box. Save and follow all safety

instructions provided by the GFCI manufacturer Power input wiring from the electrical distribution box must be at least No. 8 AWG copper wire for wire runs up to 100 feet to the spa A disconnect switch must be located where visible, not less than 5 feet from the spa and not to exceed 50 feet from the spa. Under this operating mode, if you turn on JETS HIGH or BLOWER, the spa control will automatically shut off the heater to limit the total current drawn by the spa. –9– 7. Dedicated Circuits: Your spa, when connected to a 240 Volt power source, requires an isolated, dedicated electrical supply circuit. A dedicated circuit is one where no other electrical appliances (such as a clothes dryer or air conditioner) are connected to the same circuit. If a dedicated circuit is not available, or there is a question if the circuit serves other electrical appliances, it is the responsibility and obligation of the owner/user to have one installed by a qualified electrician. IF THIS

ELECTRICAL CONTROL UNIT IS NOT WIRED TO A DEDICATED CIRCUIT, YOU RUN THE RISK OF OPERATING THIS EQUIPMENT AT A REDUCED VOLTAGE WHICH CAN CAUSE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS IN THE UNIT, AND WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. – 10 – INITIAL START-UP PROCEDURES CAUTION DO NOT APPLY POWER TO OR OPERATE THE SPA WHEN THE SPA IS PARTIALLY FILLED OR THERE IS NO WATER IN THE TUB. 1. Turn off the circuit breaker to the spa 2. Rotate all jets in the spa to a fully open position 3. Pull open the “T” handle valves located in the equipment area so that the metal rod on these valves is visible about 2 inches. (Your service person or manufacturer should do this) 4. Close the hose spigot (used for draining the spa) 5. Fill spa with water to a level of approximately 2 inches above the top of the filter cartridge 6. Turn on the circuit breaker (remember, the spa must be filled) 7. Run all jets and verify correct water circulation (This is important to prevent damage from an

airlock.) SAFETY DEVICES Your spa is equipped with the following safety features: 1. An electronic high limit switch that automatically shuts off the heater if the spa temperature exceeds 112°F. This switch is reset by first reducing the spa water temperature below 110°F, then touching the thermostat control pad adjusting the temperature down. 2. A water flow sensor that prevents the heater from running unless there is sufficient water flow This helps prevent “dry firing” of the heater. 3. An automatic freeze sensor which turns the spa on if the water temperature in the heater manifolds drops below 40°F and shuts the system down when the temperature rises above 45°F. 4. An automatic shut off system that turns off the spa jet pump(s) and air blower (optional-some models) after 30 minutes of operation. Packs are equipped with a sensor that measures the temperature of the air in the plumbing area of the spa. If the system monitors air cold enough to freeze the water in the pipes, it will automatically activate the Smart Winter Mode for a period of 24 hours. In this mode, if a pump has not been powered in the last 2 hours, the system will turn it on for one minute to prevent freezing. When the pump is running, the triangular icon above the Filter icon will blink ont he display High Temperature The HL error message flashes on the display – Except for the Smart Winter Mode, the system shuts down because the water in the spa has reached 108˚F. The HL error message appears on the display – The system has disabled the heater and pump 1 in low speed because the water temperature at the heater has reached 112˚F. Allow the water to cool down to 104˚F, then press a key to reset the system Pressure Switch To prevent a “dry fire” of the heater, a pressure switch is installed in the

pipes. The unit constantly checks the pressure switch. If the pump used to circulate water through the heater is off and the pressure switch is closed, the system will show the message FL C on the display. This will happen when the adjustment of the pressure switch is too low and the weight of the water is sufficient to close the switch. If the pump is on and the pressure switch is open, the system will show FL0 on the display and the heater will not be allowed to run. This wll happen if the adjustment of the pressure switch is too high or if there is a bad connection between the board and the switch. Note that a dirty filter limiting the amount of water flow may cause the FL 0 message to appear on the display even if the system has been working well for a while. When the pump is turned on, there is a 5 second delay before the system starts to auto-check the state of the switch. Jet Selector Valve Your spa may be equipped with a spa side selector valve.

This valve can be used to divert jet power from one area in the spa to another. This valve is fully adjustable and can be used to suit the bathers taste. The valve may be somewhat difficult to turn when the spa pump is on high speed. This is normal and is caused by the high rate of water flow and pressure that travels through the valve. Air Venturi Control The ”air venturi” control is a valve that is fully adjustable (from open to fully closed) and allows air to be introduced into a set of jets resulting in more vigorous jet action. Opening the valve increases jet pressure and closing the valve decreases the jet pressure. The valves are located on either side of your spa’s top control panel. All SPA DEPOT models have (2) two air control valves – 32 – Spa Maintenance Maintaining proper water chemistry is imperative to maintaining safe water and preventing possible damage to your spa and spa components. Start-up Procedures: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Fill spa to correct level

(approximately 2 inches above the top of the filter cartridge). Add stain and scale control, or a similar sequestering agent, such as Metal Gon. Test and adjust total alkalinity - run pump for 1/2 hour. Test and adjust pH.- run pump for 1/2 hour If sanitizing with bromine - add sodium bromide with jets running - see “bromine” in this section. a) Fill and set bromine floater or adjustable bromine feeder and place in the spa water. b) Shock water with potassium peroxymonosulfate (such as “Renew”) with jets running. 6) If sanitizing with chlorine - use only a granular “Dichlor” compound. On start up of spa, turn on all jets, add 1 oz. per 500 gal spa water Check free available chlorine (FAC) to attain 2-3 PPM Repeat if needed. For regular use, turn jets on, scatter 1/2 oz per 500 gal to spa water to maintain 2-3 PPM of FAC. (See “chlorine” section for more information on chlorine 7) Add clarifier (you may wish to add clarifier the following day, as introduction of

stain and scale control with water classifier may temporarily cloud the water. 8) Run pump for 1/2 hour. Water Quality: Your Spa Depot spa is equipped with a cartridge filter system. Filtering the water helps maintain water cleanliness and clarity. While the filter traps most solid materials, it is still necessary to add a sanitizer such as chlorine or bromine to the water in order to control bacteria, algae, and to oxidize any organic materials in the water. We recommend that you purchase your chemicals from your authorized Spa Depot dealer. Your local authorized Spa Depot dealer can also advise you on alternative methods for water sanitation. Use of the wrong chemicals can be dangerous and will void the warranty on your spa. Water Testing: It is recommended that you test your spa water regularly with an accurate test kit or test strips. These are available from your local authorized Spa Depot dealer. Be sure to follow chemical manufacturer’s instructions for chemical use. pH

Control: All water solutions have pH, which is a measure of the acid to Alkaline relationship. While a pH reading of 7.0 is considered neutral (pH is derived from a 14 point scale with 70 being neutral) a lower reading is considered acidic and a higher reading is Alkaline. The proper pH for spa water is between 72-78 High pH (above 7.8) can reduce sanitizer efficiency, cloud the water, promote scale formation on spa surface and equipment and interfere with filter operations. – 33 – When pH is to high, add a pH decreaser. Low pH (below 72) is equally damaging and can cause equipment corrosion, water that is irritating and rapid sanitizer dissipation. Add pH increaser to adjust the level Follow chemical manufacturers directions and procedures when adding chemicals to spa water. Note: Always add pH adjuster with jets operating and circulate all chemicals for at least 30 minutes. Remember that good pH control and sanitation are absolutely essential for proper spa water

treatment. Sanitizer: The importance of maintaining adequate level of sanitizer in your spa cannot be overemphasized. Warm water presents a fertile environment for the growth of bacterial and virus. This growth is prevented when adequate sanitizer levels are continuously maintained. Warning: Sanitizers such as tri-chlor (tablets or sticks), calcium hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite and any chemicals which dissolves on or remains undissolved in contact with the spa surface will damage your spa surface and will void the warranty completely. Bromine: Bromine is the most common sanitizer used in spas. Bacteria can be controlled by maintaining a proper total bromine level of 3.0-50 PPM Brominating tablets are a convenient and effective source of bromine for your spa. Do not drop bromine tablets directly into the water as this may damage the spa surface A bromine “floater” will safely and properly dispense the tablets into the spa water. When used properly, brominating tablets will

keep your water clean, clear and odor-free. To ensure maximum effectiveness add 1/2 oz. of sodium bromide per 100 gal of water every time you fill your spa This will establish a bromide reserve. Chlorine: Chlorine can also be used as a water sanitizer, however, it is sensitive to pH. To be effective you must have a pH range of 7.2-76 Any reading outside this range will greatly reduce chlorine effectiveness Use a chlorine test kit or test strips to maintain a reading of 1.0-30 PPM of free chlorine If the reading is below 1 PPM, raise the level before using the spa. If the reading is above 3 PPM, allow PPM to drop to proper range before using the spa. Read the instructions on your chlorine container carefully, or consult your local Spa Depot dealer if you are having difficulty adjusting your chlorine level. The best chlorine for your spa is a granular “Dichlor” compound. It dissolves quickly in moving water and has a nearly neutral pH. Add chlorine while jets are running and let

the jets run for 1/2 hour Generally, heavily contaminated water can be disinfected using large chlorine doses, in the range of 8-10 PPM, but a more practical method is to drain the spa and refill it will fresh water. – 34 – The effectiveness of chlorine is decreased when the cover is left off the water for two reasons: (1) sunlight decays chlorine rapidly and (2) organic debris is blown into the spa and taxes the effectiveness of the chlorine. In addition, the higher this water temperature, the faster chlorine will decay Note: Two individuals in a spa may use as much as 3 PPM of chlorine in 20 minutes. Shock Treatments (Potassium Peroxymonosulfate): Even with regular sanitization, shock treatment may be necessary on occasion. Shock is recommended over super chlorination because it does not add additional sanitizer to the water. It is also effective in oxidizing wastes and will reduce chloramines or bromamines. Follow the manufacturers instructions listed on the label. Super

Chlorination: Super Chlorination (or shock treatment), quickly oxidizes the spa water to burn our wastes such as perspiration, hairspray, lotions, etc. that cannot be removed by the spa filter This waste build-up reduces the power of the sanitizer, making the water dull and irritating to the eyes and skin. It may also produce an odor. When this occurs, the “free” chlorine has become a “chloramine” which is ineffective as a sanitizer This can be eliminated by super chlorination as needed. An application of 5 times the normal chlorine dosage will act an adequate treatment. Water Clarifiers (Flocculating Agents): Some wastes left in spa water may not be filterable and can result in cloudy, dull water. Using a water clarifier whenever you fill your spa and then weekly thereafter will help keep your water clear. Note: Cloudy water may also be caused by high pH. A water clarifier will attract small particles and form larger ones which will become big enough to get trapped in

the filter. Stain & Scale Inhibitor (Controlling Stain & Scale): Staining and scaling are common problems in spa. Because the water is hot, scale is deposited more quickly. The circulation of water can cause the erosion of metals from spa equipment which can stain interior surfaces. A weekly dose of a stain and scale fighter will help control these problems A sequestering agent, such as “MetalGon”, should always be added to the spa water when filling a spa (for the first time or when draining and refilling). This will help eliminate metals in your water and increases the life of your spa equipment. – 35 – Total Alkalinity: Total alkalinity is the amount of Carbonate, Bicarbonate and Hydroxyl ions in the water. TA (total alkalinity) affect and buffers the pH of the water. With high TA above 160, pH resists adjustment With low TA below 130, pH is unstable and difficult to keep in the ideal range. Proper TA levels allow other chemicals to work at their

opportunity. Foam Inhibitor: Soap residue from a bather’s body, hair, and swimsuit combined with rapid circulation of spa water may cause foaming in your spa. Foam inhibitors will suppress foam, but cannot remove soap from the water When foaming occurs, a shock treatment can oxidize the soap in your water and help prevent this condition. If foam remains a problem, change the water. Consult the directions on the foam inhibitor container for usage amount. When adding chemicals to your spa water, add to the center of the spa with the pump and air blower (bubbles) operating simultaneously. Never add chemicals directly into the skimmer Make sure the water is heated. Never add chemicals to cold water as this will affect the chemical reaction Store all chemicals in a cool, dry place and in such a manner to prevent contact by children or pets. You should consult your authorized spa dealer prior to any chemical use. – 36 – Care For Your Spa Draining Your Spa: All Spa Depot spas are

gravity drained. Do not drain water onto your lawn or plants unless all of the bromine or chlorine has dissipated from the spa water. The sanitizer in your spa water can be dissipated very quickly by leaving the spa cover off and exposing the water to direct sunlight. Drain and refill your spa about every 4 months. For heavy spa use, you may wish to change the water more frequently Keeping Your Water Clean & Safe MONDAY FRIDAY / TEST: Bromine/Chlorine pH Total Alkalinity / / / TEST: Bromine/Chlorine pH Total Alkalinity ADJUST: ADD: Follow steps 1-4 Stain and Scale control / / ADJUST: Follow steps 1-3 STEP# 1: Adjust Total Alkalinity - ideal range = 130-160. STEP# 4: Stain and Scale Control - Add required amount with jets on, weekly. Label, NOTE: The chemical chart above is a simple schedule for moderate spa use. Depending on the bather load and frequency of use, chemical balancing may be required more often. To drain: 1. Turn power off to spa 2. Attach a hose to the hose bib located in the equipment area of your spa Open the valve and allow the water to drain away from the spa. 3. Clean the spa surface - (see care of spa surfacethis section) 4. Refill spa - follow initial start-up procedures to reheat spa – 37 – Filter Cleaning: Always be sure spa is off before removing and cleaning filter cartridges. We recommend you clean the filters every 3-4 weeks, as preventative maintenance. Acrylic Surface Spas: 1. Unscrew filters and remove from spa Clean the cartridge with the high

pressure garden hose Every other cleaning, soak the filter in a filter cleaning solution, then rinse thoroughly, and reinstall. Quarite (Textured) Surface Spas: 1. Filter lid lifts off - clean and remove filters as described above The Spa Surface: Your Spa Depot spa has a very high quality finish. Stains and dirt will generally not adhere to the surface After draining the spa wipe down with a soft cloth. Should you need to remove any dirt or debris a very mild soap may be used with warm water. Be sure to rinse detergent well as this will cause suds when refilling the spa. Caution: Do not use “409” type cleaners or other caustic solutions as they may damage the spa surface and void your warranty. You may wax the spa surface if you choose. This adds a protective coating on the finish Use a spa wax only. Follow instruction on label of wax product Consult your Spa Depot dealer Care of the Spa Cabinet: When properly cared for, the wood cabinet of your spa will maintain beauty

for many years. All wood reacts to the elements differently by expanding and contracting. Re-staining the wood every 3-4 months will help to protect it. Consult your dealer for recommended stains to use in your area Please note that the cabinet is not warranted against reaction to natural weather conditions. The wood must be properly maintained. Do not allow an empty spa to sit in direct sunlight. Place the spa cover over the empty spa and use spacers to elevate the spa cover to allow for the air ventilation. Care for the Spa Cover: The thermal cover for your spa is an extremely durable foam insulated product. See the manufacturers literature for proper cleaning and care instructions. When the spa is not in use, it is recommended that the cover tie downs always be utilized to discourage unsupervised children and minimize heat loss. Small locks are available for the cover tie downs. In either case these locking methods are not considered adequate to keep unauthorized people from

entering the spa. – 38 – Ozone: Ozone is natures natural purifier. Chemically known as 03 and is produced from oxygen molecules In nature, ozone is produced from lightning bolts during electrical storms to purify the air or by ultra violet rays of the sun to form our protective ozone layer. Your spas ozone generator duplicates this processes using special ultra violet bulbs. Ozone is used to help purify many items from bottled drinking water, cooling tower water to pool and spa water. In your spa, ozone helps remove oils, grease, perspiration, suntan lotions etc from the water It will also help Chlorine or Bromine do their sanitizing job more effectively. Using the Spa Depot ozone generator (optional) in your spa combined with a proper chemical program, will help reduce your annual chemical cost for sanitizing your spa. Ozone is a strong oxidizer and helps reduce the bi-products of Chlorine and Bromine called Chloramines or Bromamines. Remember, ozone is most effective when

used with a good water maintenance program. Ask your local Spa Depot dealer for more details. – 39 – SPECIAL COLD WEATHER INSTRUCTIONS Winter can be one of the most enjoyable times of the year to enjoy your Spa Depot spa. As it is difficult to get water out of this plumbing lines, WE DO NOT RECOMMEND DRAINING YOUR SPA FOR THE WINTER. However, if you decide not to use your spa during the winter, we recommend you winterize as follows: If you drain your spa turn off the main power to the spa. Drain as completely as possible You may want to tilt the spa on edge and use a wet-vac or high pressure blower to evacuate as much water as possible. This will require additional people. Try to get as much water out of plumbing and equipment as possible When the spa is completely empty, leave the hose bib open and open the pump drain plug located on the bottom side of the front end of the pump. Loosen all pump unions and fittings to allow air and water to expand freely within the system.

This should help prevent water freezing expansion from damaging pipes and fittings. The idea is to try to eliminate any sealed areas in the system that may contain water Should you have a heavy snowfall during winter months, you may want to build a protective cover cap for the spa cover. This may be done with a 5” or 75” piece of plywood and a few 2”x4” cross members You spa is equipped with automatic freeze protection. However, power outage can cause your spa equipment system to freeze quickly. During freezing conditions, check your spa frequently to ensure proper operation Be sure to check your spa after any power failure to ensure the spa is operational. For additional information on winterizing your spa, contact your local Spa Depot dealer. Warranty Service Information Your Spa Depot warranty gives you specific coverage. Be sure you read your warranty carefully The warranty does not cover problems resulting from misuse, abuse, or neglect and it does not cover problems

caused by improper installation or “perceived” problems caused by failure to read the spa owner’s manual. – 40 – TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS ACTION 1.
