Source: http://www.doksinet Neocate Recipe Book Your Guide To Weaning And Beyond Source: http://www.doksinet Foreword Your baby grows and develops dramatically during their first year of life: His/Her birth weight doubles by six months and triples by one year. Rapid growth continues beyond age 1 and nutrition plays a very important role. From about 6 months, neither human breast milk nor infant formula milk intake alone are enough to meet their needs. Introducing solid foods, known as weaning, is essential for continued growth and development. Over time, their feeding skills improve and teeth arrive increasing the variety and texture of foods your baby is capable of managing. By age 1, most babies are able to enjoy feeding themselves a wide variety of family foods. A suspicion of food allergy during this time can be worrying and confusing; this booklet aims to address these fears. A diagnosis of Cows’ Milk Protein Allergy can present you with many challenges: what’s best to
feed my baby, when to start weaning and what weaning foods are suitable? This booklet aims to provide you with practical help and guidance. Human breast milk is the preferred fuel for growth. For the first 6 months of life babies including those with food allergy ideally should only receive breast milk. If however you have made an informed decision to bottle feed your baby then a hypoallergenic formula, such as Neocate LCP, should be given. Most healthy babies do not need any solid food before 17 weeks of age. When your baby is ready and from about 6 months they will start to show a greater interest in food and will be ready to start weaning. Neither breast milk nor Neocate LCP alone can meet these needs and “solid” food becomes essential. This is a time where your baby learns new skills that encourage development. It is a gradual process that introduces your baby to new tastes and textures and eventually onto “family” foods. It will be important to avoid all contact with
cows’ milk protein during this time. Avoiding cows’ milk in childhood is a major nutritional concern. Excluding an entire food group (milk and dairy products) can have serious repercussions on vulnerable developing bones and needs careful consideration and planning. You will also need to discuss with your healthcare professional (HCP) whether you need to avoid goat milk and soy milk. There is a high risk of reacting to these foods with Cows’ Milk Protein Allergy. This booklet aims to provide you with all the information you will need to do this while guaranteeing that your baby gets the right nutrition for growth and development. Signs your baby is ready for weaning Your baby is ready to start exploring food from a spoon when they: If your baby seems interested but refuses food, don’t force them, try again the next day. Why weaning is important zinc have been pretty much used up. Their growth and development continue all the while but neither breast milk nor formula can meet their requirements. Introducing solid food from a spoon becomes essential to support growth,
development and important skills of eating, drinking and swallowing. This is a gradual process and it introduces your baby to new tastes and new textures. 7 Neocate LCP and weaning As your baby eats more solid foods, you will find that the amount of Neocate LCP they are taking may start to decrease. Weaning Weaning Source: http://www.doksinet A minimum of 600ml (20oz) of Neocate LCP is needed during weaning (6-12months). Neocate LCP will provide your baby with most of their requirements for key nutrients as they progress through weaning and should continue to be your baby’s main drink for the first 12 months of life. Offer cool boiled water if extra fluid is needed. See Toddler Section for information on Neocate follow-on products for 12months+ All babies, breast fed and bottle fed, need a vitamin D3 supplement in the form of vitamin drops from birth to age 1 year. than infants who start solids before 6 months Lumpy foods - After 2-3 weeks of Stage 1 foods your baby should be moved on to a wider variety of lumpier Stage 2 foods Gagging Gagging is a normal part of weaning and happens when your infant is learning how to move lumps of food around their mouth. It is a normal feature of learning to eat and swallow Gagging is a sign that your infant can protect their airway and can clear food from the back of their mouth. This reflex will gradually lessen over time provided your baby is challenged with new textures Gagging is not choking, but it can be scary for parents when it happens and you might be tempted to avoid offering lumpier textures Gagging is something that will only start to lessen when your baby is repeatedly challenged with lumpier textures Drinking from a cup - Your baby should be encouraged to start drinking from a free flowing lidded cup at this stage, expect a mess as they learn another important skill of how
to sip Developing taste buds - Providing a wide variety of foods without added sugar and salt can help prevent your baby developing a strong preference for these foods as they grow 19 Stage 2 Source: http://www.doksinet Iron rich foods are an important part of the weaning diet at this stage to help prevent anaemia. Haem iron from beef, lamb, pork and poultry is more easily absorbed than non haem iron from green leafy vegetables, pulses (pea, bean, and lentil), supplements and formula. Cured meats (ham, bacon, rasher, sausage, salami) are not suitable haem iron sources. They contain too much salt and can contain many additives and preservatives and often contain cows’ milk protein. Bran and tea reduce iron absorption and should be avoided. Other foods best avoided at this stage are listed on page 13 Omega 3 fats have an important role in brain and eye development. Breast milk and Neocate LCP

They’re on the move and full of life Restricted adult diets (high fibre, low fat etc.) are not at all suitable Toddlers grow and develop rapidly and they need fuel to allow this. Food is the fuel and
they have specific nutrient needs for energy (calories) and bone health among others. Because they have high needs but relatively small tummies they will need to eat roughly every 3 hours and will need snacks between their traditional meals of breakfast, dinner, tea and supper before bed. These snacks need to be nutritious; it’s best to avoid those high in empty calories (sweets, chocolate, crisps, biscuits and fizzy drinks). Toddlers Source: http://www.doksinet Food choices at this age can affect eating habits for life so it is really important to encourage a wide variety of tastes and to encourage savoury over sweet flavours. A suspicion of food allergy during this time can be worrying, confusing and can present you with many challenges: what’s best to feed my toddler, what do I avoid, what do I include, what about childcare, parties and play dates? This section of the booklet aims to provide you with practical help and guidance. It will be important to avoid all contact with

Excluding an entire food group (milk and dairy products) can have serious repercussions on vulnerable developing bones and needs careful consideration and planning. By this age, it will usually be clear if any there are any other foods causing allergy. You should link in with the healthcare professional who diagnosed your toddler’s cows’ milk allergy and ask if, when, how and where to re test/challenge to see if the allergy has resolved. Some children will outgrow allergy to milk or egg by school age. This section of the booklet aims to provide you with all the information you will need to do this while ensuring that your toddler gets the right nutrition for growth and development. a healthcare professional to continue a cows’ milk-free diet beyond the age of 12 months. Neocate Active is similar to Neoacte LCP and is made from nonallergenic amino acids that will not contribute to an allergic reaction in your child. Neocate Active is suitable for children from 1-10 years and is used to supplement the diet with key nutrients such as calcium, Neocate Active is available in 2 variants - Unflavoured and Blackcurrant and is suitable as a drink. Neocate Active is made up by adding 1 sachet to 240mls of water and the recommended intake is 2 sachets per day (600ml) for 1-10 years olds. Neocate Active can also be added to foods, see recipe section for details. glance Your toddler with cows’ milk protein allergy Toddlers Bread, cereal and potatoes: Toddlers should have a portion of these foods at breakfast, dinner and tea and usually need more of these foods as they get older. A portion is 1 slice or 1 cup cooked or half cup of uncooked. Once there is no allergy to wheat then it should be included. Choose no added sugar wholemeal cereals and grains Fruit and vegetables: Toddlers should be working up to 5 portions each day of whole fruits and cooked veg. rather than purées and juices Encourage a wide variety of different colours, seasonal produce is better value. (One portion is around half a disposable plastic cup full) Milk, yogurts and cheese: These foods will have to be foods replaced with nutritionally equal alternatives. See pages 60-63 Meat, fish and alternatives: Toddlers should have a minimum portion size roughly the size and thickness of their palm. These foods are an important source of protein and iron Oily fish
should be included at least twice a week. Once there is no allergy to egg or nut these foods should be included. Whole nut carries a choking risk Fats, spreads and oils: Toddlers should have small amounts of sunflower oil, safflower oil, corn oil, olive oil, canola oil. rapeseed oil and dairy-free margarine made from these oils (high in polyunsaturates/monounsaturates). Dairy-free margarines can be high in salt and are best used sparingly. Sugar, cakes and sweets: These foods are not needed for healthy growth. Drinks Every drink at this age should be offered from an unlidded cup rather than
bottle and teat or sippy cup. This promotes better dental health, speech and feeding skills Meal patterns Toddlers should eat their main meals with others and learn to understand that these eating times are a normal part of the day. Nourishing snacks are not intended as a meal substitute, they are a necessary nutrient “top up” for small tummies. Letting a toddler graze through the day on their own terms usually results in unhealthy eating habits and food choices as your toddler grows. It should be discouraged Preparing your own food Preparing food from raw materials will ensure you are in control of the allergen and nutritional content. If you decide to use commercial toddler food you will need to check every label every time for cows’ milk and other allergens. It’s best to choose savoury varieties in preference to sweet/dessert/pudding varieties. Breakfast and supper ideas Dinner/tea

They will test your limits and push the boundaries to see if they get the reaction from you that they want. This is a normal part of toddler development and is very common in under 5’s. Try To
and reduce if interfering with appetite the sauce beside it rather than on top of it Try not to gives the wrong message 66 Source: http://www.doksinet Toddlers Childcare and playschool environments It is ideal if you can meet everyone involved in your toddlers care, face to face, and to enquire how new/absent staff will be updated. A clear one page plan is very useful, clearly stating the food allergen(s) involved, food(s) to be avoided and how to reduce the risk of accidental exposure. Most childcare menus can easily be adapted for allergy with minimum
disruption. A “no food sharing” policy among all children is probably the single most useful measure that childcare providers can adapt and it is well worth discussing this with them in advance. Training for catering providers interested in learning more about food allergy is available by contacting the Training Section of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. Anaphylaxis Ireland provides a free educational guide for parents, teachers and schools on their website. See useful contacts section in appendix. Birthday parties at home These are great opportunities to show other parents that life doesn’t have to See suggestions in recipe section of this booklet. Play dates and parties Toddlers cannot always identify the food that they are allergic to and will need adult supervision when making food choices. It is ideal to meet with other parents as far in
advance as possible of a party or play date. Providing details of all the party/treat foods that your toddler can have is as important as advising about the food to be avoided. 67 Source: http://www.doksinet TODDLERS: Recipes AGE 1 year + Butternut Squash and Sweet Potato Soup 3-4 portions INGREDIENTS FREE Neocate Active METHOD 1.
