International Student Handbook College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University Ⅰ Introduction 1. Introduction of Tongji University Tongji University is one of the leading universities directly under the State Ministry of Education in China. Institute of Automobile Marketing and Sino-German Institute which is authorized by Chinese and German governments to run postgraduate courses. There are also six university hospitals located in different campuses. The university now registers over 50,000 students at all levels from certificate and diploma courses to Bachelors Degrees, Masters, PhD programs and post doctoral attachments. There are over 4200 academic staff for teaching and/or research, among whom there are 6 Members of Chinese Academy of Science, 7 Members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 710 professors and 1500 associate professors. The university offers diverse courses in its 82 Bachelors Degrees, 218 Masters, 94 PhD programs and 16 post doctoral mobile stations. As one of the state leading centers for scientific research, the university has 22 state key laboratories and engineering research centers. 2.College of Design and Innovation College of Design and Innovation (D&I), Tongji University was developed

from Department of Industrial Design founded in 1986. Department of Industrial Design has been a part of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning which was among the earliest three domestic colleges of universities of science and engineering that set up this department. In 2000, the department was officially renamed Department of Art and Design, Environmental Design, Graphic Design and Multimedia Design as the four research areas. College of Design and Innovation (D&I), Tongji University was separated from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji in 2009. D&I is aiming to be an international benchmark of next generation design and innovation 1 education and research. The missions of D&I are: to educate leaders of sustainable design innovation, to serve the transition from manufacture China to Creative China and to be an agent of sustainable Change as a design school. The College is the only design school in Mainland China which has been ranked by

Business Week among the worlds best design schools for three consecutive times since 2006. It was also the only School in Mainland China selected by Psdtuts+ as one of the 18 best design schools worldwide. The college is one of the core members of CUMULUS, DESIS, etc. Domestically, our Design Program is member of Professional Steering Committee of Industrial and Art Design, Ministry of Education, and our Industrial Design Program is included in the national construction project for distinctive program of higher education. Altogether, D&I has around 556 students (including 398 Undergraduate students, 158 MA students）and 66 faculty members. 3. Introduction of College Discipline Postgraduate students of our program majoring in Design will be granted degree of Master of Arts in Design. The design education of Tongji was started for 1940’s with the strong connection with Bauhaus. After being a part of architecture department for almost 50 years, the Department of Industrial Design

(four-year undergraduate) was founded in 1986, it was later renamed as Department of Art & Design. In 1995, the college started the recruitment of postgraduates majoring in Architectural Design and Theory in design as the PhD degree program. In 2000, we were qualified for granting Masters Degree in Art Design. In 2011, Art Design Program was officially renamed Design Program. In 2007, the college launched the Double-Masters Degree Program with Politecnico di Milano. We take full advantage of the internationalized education, the integration of production, study and research as well as the outstanding disciplines at Tongji University in order to achieve resource sharing and academic exploration. The competent faculty of our program have rich experience in design research, practice and teaching; many instructors used to study and work abroad, and world-famous scholars are invited as our visiting professors. Besides, the international exchange of our program is quite active. Through

academic cooperation with prestigious domestic and international design institutions and colleges under globalization together with active domestic social practice, we keep the cutting edge of our discipline and possess high international academic reputation. As a result, we are on of the CUMULUS member institutions. At present, the distinctive research areas of Design Program include Product Design, Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design, Digital Media Design, Interaction Design, Inclusive Design and so forth. By 2014, a complete system of postgraduate English curriculum will be formed consisting of six degree major courses, four non-degree major courses and two special English courses. Students can choose all courses instructed in English. This curriculum system will lay a solid foundation for launching more dual-degree programs. Every year, we organize four international workshops and one international summer camp. In the process, we keep learning from experience and

encourage 2 more teachers to instruct students in English. Through creating postgraduate English courses, we make preparation for international assessment of our college. By hosting design contests, we try to explore new cooperation forms of cross-disciplinary courses. We jointly make cross-disciplinary researches, cultivate innovative postgraduates and undertake important cross-disciplinary research projects with other colleges of Tongji University such as College of Architecture and Urban Planning, School of Economics and Management, College of Mechanical Engineering, College of Material Science and Engineering, College of Civil Engineering, College of Life Science and Technology, Medical School, College of Electronics and Information Engineering, College of Software Engineering, School of Liberal Arts, College of Law / Intellectual Property Institute, College of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanic. The college is committed to developing a national-leveled center of design

research and becoming a model of cross-disciplinary design research in China. Meanwhile, we strengthen our close cooperation with domestic and international brother colleges, and promote international teaching cooperation by inviting specialized experts and by course exchange with colleges abroad. We plan to invite eleven specialized experts in three years---on average more than three experts each year, and to develop long-term stable research cooperation with University of Cambridge in Britain, Darmstadt University in Germany, Kyushu University and Ritsumeikan University in Japan. What is more, we intend to build research bases in different places---more than three bases in three years---so as to develop cross-cultural and diversified characteristics of research. We try to utter more voices in international conferences and organize at least one symposium. 4. Introduction of Faculty The competent faculty of our college consists of renowned experts and professors at home and abroad,

including the chief planner of the Shanghai World Expo, Editorial Board member of top design journal like Design Issues, Board Member of CUMULUS, DESIS, DRS, etc. Our professional instructors come from prestigious design institutions and colleges in Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Sweden and other countries, and many of them used to work in famous domestic and international design companies. Thus, not only do they have strong professional teaching and research capacities but they are experienced in design practice. Besides, we also invites world-famous design masters Luigi Colani, Yrjö Kukkapuro together with experts and scholars in this field such as Mr. Yrjö Sotamaa, former president of University of Art and Design Helsinki, Professor Aldo Cibic from Politecnico di Milano and Professor Uwe. R Bruckner from Basel School of Design as our visiting professors. The key to our faculty system lies in learning and improvement of the present instructors as well as

transformation and innovation of the faculty structure. We combine visiting experts with existing resources in college and at university, and try to bring domestic and international social resources into full play in order to introduce visiting professors and lecturers in various ways. 5. Research areas and strategy 3 The college encourages theme based research strategies according to its mission and vision. The key research areas of the college can be described as followings: - Design for social innovation and sustainability and co-creative design innovation - User/human centric and including inclusive design - Design strategy and theory including art and design history and trends - Design thinking, design management and leadership including brand strategies and creative industry - Interaction design including user experience design - Digital design including digital media Design The college’s PhD education is closely linked to the research initiatives. Tutoring is the basic

and single most important element. Clustering PhD students and their tutors to the thematic groups (pooling of resources) helps to build a healthy research community and create a critical mass to the chosen areas. Researchers and professors are encouraged to exchange with the colleges international partners, to build knowledge networks and get access to important expertise. The colleges ALL DESIGN magazine is a good platform of publications. The College makes extensive use of social resources for the development of teaching and research. It works with leading companies, such as Haier, Autodesk, China telecom, IBM, Forever, Chrystal, etc. to establish “GreenChain” consultant alliances of Art & Design to establish sustainability and innovation oriented design research platform. Knowledge community together form a good research eco-system for the researchers. The college supports both "practice based research" and "theoretical research". Research is always an important way to feed to development of education and MA students are also encouraged to be involved at an early stage with the research groups. 6. International Exchange The college has established a large open international network. It’s active member of CUMULUS International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media. The college has signed cooperation agreements with more than 20 internationally renowned institutions. Among them, the college has established double Master Program with the Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, Bauhaus Weimer and Aalto University. Application Each academic year comprises of two semesters: Spring Semester and Fall Semester. Spring Semester normally commences in February and ends in July, while Fall Semester normally commences in September and ends in January. The application period for Spring Semester is from beginning of November to the middle of December, and the application period for Fall Semester from beginning of May to the middle of June. Registration If the application is successfully accepted, the

applicant will receive the "Admission Notice for International Students" issued by Tongji University. The students have to register at the Administration office of the College of Design and Innovation to complete the registration within the required period indicated on the admission notice. （1）Visa / Residence Permit Procedures ①Applying for Visa to Enter China Students who are going to study in China should apply for an entry visa of X or F (less than 6 months’ study duration). After receiving all the required application materials and application fee (most of the exchange students are exempt from the application fee), and a confirmation of the student’s admission from the college, the International Student Office will prepare Admission Notice, JW202 Form and International Student Guide in 2 weeks, and send those 3 documents according to the method students have provided while applying. Students should use Admission Notice and JW202 Form to apply for X-Visa (with a

Health Certificate issued by the hospital designated by the Embassy or Consulate) or F-Visa from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in the student’s home country. Students must process the registration with the valid ordinary passport and visa with enough validity. ② Residence Permit (study)(RP) Full-time students, including: the degree program students, students of Preparation program before major study, students of full-time long-term Chinese program, and the general or senior scholars of advanced study must use RP or F visa while studying at Tongji University: Degree program students: Must use RP (study) processed by the help of the International Student Office. Residence Permit (RP) is a legal residence certificate issued to a foreign individual to work or study in China by the Ministry of Public Security of China. During its validity it allows multiple entries to Chinese mainland. Students of long-term Chinese program, scholars of advanced study: Use RP or F visa. But if the

validity of F visa is less than study period, it must be changed to RP (study) with the help of International Student Office. Self-funded students must pay for the total tuition of one semester or an academic year before International Student Office issues the Office Letter for processing. Fees of relevant documents preparation and processing charge are paid by students themselves, no matter self-funded or scholarship covered. ③ Validity of RP & Processing Charge Self-funded: it is valid at the end of the first academic year for the degree program students, and then can be extended to the end of the whole academic period one time or by times; for full-time students of long-term Chinese program or scholars of advanced studies, the validity of one’s RP is in accordance with the tuition he or she paid. 6 Scholarship covered (SGS or CSC): for the major study students, the validity can be the same with the whole academic period, processing by one time or extended for several

times. For the Chinese training program students, the valid duration is the same with the program period. ④Charge ： 1day ≦ validity of RP ﹤ 1 year ： 400RMB 1year ≦ validity of RP ﹤ 3 years ： 800RMB 3year ≦ validity of RP ﹤ 5 years ： 1000RMB Documents for Applying RP (study): ·Original Passport ·Application Form for Visa or Residence Permit ·1 photo (3cm X 4cm) · School Letter (after full tuition payment) ·JW201 or JW202 Form ·Original Admission Notice ·Copy of the Registration Form of Temporary Residence (RFTR)： 1) Students check into the International Student Center must draw RFTR within 24 hours; 2) Students move in the apartment outside campus must draw RFTR from the local police station with the passport and renting contract within 24 hours. If one’s school registration goes first than moving in the apartment, he or she can fill out an International Student Office form for residence register and show to the local police station while applying the

RFTR. 3) Students must go to draw RFTR every time they move to a new apartment, and should hand in its photocopy to International Student Office. Meanwhile, one must apply a School Letter to register a residence change at visa center in 10 days if his or her RP is handled by International Student Office. · Health Certificate ： 1) Students who apply for RP for the first time or reapply for RP 3 months after the first RP expired must go for a health check; 2) Although students with X visa did health check in the home country, they must go to the designated hospital at Shanghai for verification and pay for it themselves; otherwise they can’t get the Health Certificate 3) The designated hospital is Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center (15 Jinbang Road, near Hami Road). Health Certificate obtained abroad (for verification only), RMB500. ⑤Other Items: Collective Processing The International Student Office will schedule collective processing only one time at the beginning of each semester. Other time, one has to go to Visa Center (1500 Minsheng Rd, PuDong District) by him/herself. Consulting Tel of Visa Center is 28951900 ⑥Expiry & Cancel Once the study finishes, students must leave China before the expiry date of RP (study) or F-Visa. If one decides to continue the study, he or she must set apart enough time for processing extension 7 within the validity. If a student is dismissed or drops out, he must go to the visa center to cancel RP (study) with relevant documents get from the International Student Office and receive another month’s temporary visa. ⑦Visa of Student’s Relatives Relatives of students (spouse, children under 18-years old, parents or guardian of a student under 18-years old) can stay in China only with an L-Visa. ICES

can issue the School Letter for its extension as long as the student submits the identification letter of their relations. Relative’s L visa can be extended 2 times in one year for at most 6 months long each time, and its valid duration must be within that of the student’s RP. Passport, copy of Registration Form of Temporary Residence (RFTR), the identification letter and 1 photo (3cm X 4cm) of each relative is needed for processing. Loss of Passport and Changes of Relevant Information Go to the International Student Office within 10 days to get the related documents, then to the visa center or visa office to process it. A new Registration Form of Temporary Residence (RFTR) is required to change the address. If the passport loses, one should report to the International Student Office first, then go to visa center to register. After receiving a new passport from the embassy or consulate of his own country, one should prepare all the documents required and apply for a new visa or RP.

（2）Medical Insurance The foreign students must purchase a medical insurance plan for their study in China, in order to pay for the expense for possible accidental injury and medical treatments in hospitalization. Students without medical insurance plan will be rejected for registration. The plan recommended by the Ministry of Education is the Comprehensive Insurance & Protection Scheme for Foreigners staying in China. It basically covers the expenses for the medical treatments for accidental injury and hospitalization in public hospitals in the mainland of China. Medical assistance service in emergency is also provided The detailed introduction is available on registration. This plan is compulsory to all international students and prerequisite to the registration. （3）Accommodation The International Students Service Centers is located on three campuses of Tongji University independently. They are all facilitated with telephone sets, toilets, showers, air-conditioning, public

kitchens, classrooms, and business services such as duplication, fax and e-mail sending, typing and air-ticket and train ticket booking are offered.
