The first-ever technology guide for foodservice by Foodable Network. SPONSORED BY Vist us at www.foodabletvcom “Technology is the saving grace of our industry.” Paul Barron, CEO, Editor-in-Chief, Executive Producer 2 2016 Restaurant Technology Guide LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER By Paul Barron, CEO, Editor-in-Chief, Executive Producer Technology is the saving grace of our industry. Look around and you not only see the evolution of the tech-savvy consumer, but you will also see the tech-savvy brands that are now a commonplace in the restaurant business. Now that technology is a mainstay, we can get back to the real business of serving guests and making them love the restaurant experience. 2017 marks the 10-year anniversary of the iPhone and the world has changed in how we communicate more than any other aspect that we have seen in the past 30 years of technology. In the 90s, it was the touch screen POS that made the experience a bit more loveable for operators by getting

more data about sales performance. The next 10 years began the failed kiosk era that was just a little too early for its own good, along with email explosion that became the first wave of a new consumer touchpoint ecosystem. Today, the communication system leads with social and video with apps and technology all stemming from the smartphone. The real question is how long will this phase last before we see the next consumer technology tool that will shift the landscape once again. Where are we going with all of this on-location technology that enables a one-to-one communication or custom messaging by user? Social has been great for broadcasting our message, but now the tuning out of brands is underway by consumers. This past year registered the first year in social media that brand name mentions went down, but brand experience mentions went up. What this means is that brands are pushing the wrong buttons now that consumers have the ability to tune out the mass communication of what

social media has become. The movement of eating out less is 2017’s biggest challenge for the restaurant industry, and it could be technology that saves the day. More customized experiences will be critical with use of Wi-Fi tools like Zenreach that enable a 2016 Restaurant Technology Guide 3 complete custom communication with guests based on immediate need versus the broadcast solution that social media has driven over the past five years. Beacons will be the next major mover we’ll see in 2017 that will connect brands to the needs on a much more customized basis, with targeted ads that cater specifically to consumer needs and wants, but the big play here with beacons is the cross-competitive data that will reveal what brands their guests are using and how they can lure them into their restaurant. Here are the winners and losers of 2017 Restaurant Technology: Email and Wi-Fi will make a resurgence while beacon technology catches up for more one-to-one, onlocation tactics.

Digital signage companies LG and Sony will battle to drive into spaces that allow for more display tech like the flexible and super thin OLED displays, which will enable new digital format messaging in places we’ve never imagined before. Wait and guest-experience technology will improve and assist in ways that could challenge the online reservation business with a surge in availability times and new ways for restaurants to maximize how guests can get better service. Online reservations will become immersive, with expansion into more experience aspects around food information, custom experiences, and boutique offerings to add more options for operators to differentiate. 4 2016 Restaurant Technology Guide CRM will explode onto the social scene. Get ‘em while you can. As social starts to wane as the key message tool for brands and into an ad-only option, CRM will become super important to build specific databases that start to reconnect the brand guest database back to the brand

where it belongs. Facebook likes and Twitter follows will become less and less important. On Demand and mobile ordering wins the day, though the failures of many are true, the demand by the consumer is clear, and it’s just a matter of time before on-demand food becomes a reality. My prediction is that it will be a smart brand that wins, versus a technology company that solves the problem. This could impact online ordering both positively and negatively, depending on the position of companies like OLO and Splickit. Social media will start its demise as a broadcast method for brands as they are pushed out by news outlets and information hubs that are non-brand specific. This will leave paid traction the only vein available for brands looking to reach the hundreds of millions on social media. The free lunch is over and the anatomy of social media teams will drastically change this year to analytics, programmers, and integration specialists. The Big Challenge of 2017 Keeping guests

coming out to eat. A fall-off of 4 percent less guest traction is expected in the first quarter, and the trend could continue the rest of the year if brands are not creating new experiences that are delivering more than just food. ABOUT OUR SPONSOR Zenreach aims to make marketing simple and powerful for brick-and-mortar businesses, all through Wi-Fi an element of hospitality for you and an element of convenience for your guests. This company aims to “close the online-to-offline loop,” bringing tangible, physical retail activity through digital utiliites. Through its platform, restaurants, retail stores, and other venues are able to offer visitors painless, custombranded Wi-Fi services. In return, this platform offers audience analytics and seamlessly integrated email marketing, CRM, and customer communications back to those businesses. Setup takes less than five minutes. Zenreach can offer to send clients a personal access point or leverage the client’s existing Wi-Fi

infrastructure. Guests have access to free, reliable Wi-Fi that only requires a onetime login on their first visit. With each return, the platform collects more customer information, including contact information, demographics, and visit history, to curate the most optimal marketing strategies for the brand. Zenreach users can also set up automated, targeted messages triggered by customer actions for the ultimate guest-relationship building tactics, all while being able to identify their most loyal customers and receive real-time foot traffic analysis. 2016 Restaurant Technology Guide 5 “Now that technology is a mainstay, we can get back to the real business of serving guests and making them love the restaurant experience.” Paul Barron, CEO, Editor-in-Chief, Executive Producer 6 2016 Restaurant Technology Guide EDITORS’ CHOICE AWARD WINNERS AND TOP CATEGORY WINNERS SOCIAL MEDIA POINT OF SALE Sprout Social is more than than a social media management tool. It’s a

social media measuring and marketing tool and, arguably, a social media mastering tool. Along with the functionality to advocate and provide analytics for businesses, communicate to customers within the platform’s channels, and collaborate on creative projects across teams, Sprout Social seamlessly integrates with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Google+, and more. Users won’t need to hop from account to another. They can plan their social media strategies all in one place. Oracle Hospitality crosses multiple segments. From food and beverage and hotels and resorts, to sports and entertainment and casino and gaming, its reach may be extensive and varied, but one thing remains the same no matter which industry our Point of Sale Editor’s Choice Award Winner goes: Oracle Hospitality’s capabilities are unparalleled. Oracle acquired MICROS Systems, a name that raised the bar for restaurant POS systems, and continues that tradition. Although newly founded in 2010, this

year’s Social Media Editors’ Choice Award Winner already has over 15,000 satisfied customers, with impressive names such as Hyatt, Marvel, Microsoft, and Uber in its roster. Whether it’s for your brand or a client whose digital voice you’re building, with Sprout Social, your social growth and ROI won’t just sprout it’ll flourish. Its POS solutions streamline business operations, increase profitability, and strengthen customer loyalty. How? Not only does Oracle have a wide range of applications (order management, kitchen performance tracking, menu creation, and cash flow monitoring among others), it can even facilitate these back-office assignments through mobile in order keep chefs and operators away from the desk and on the line where they need to be. And good news for servers! They won’t need to swarm a terminal to enter customer orders. Oracle Hospitality’s tablets have that covered. 2016 Restaurant Technology Guide 7 ONLINE SERVICES UberEATS is not simply

an Editors’ Choice Award Winner. UberEATS is No 1 in this year’s Restaurant Technology Guide. You’d be hardpressed to find someone who has never heard the name Uber, especially because Uber Technologies Inc. disrupted the transportation industry in ways that have never been done before. Uber, taking its concept of accessing personal drivers with a single tap on a mobile device, shifted that structure to foodservice and delivery. The UberEATS app, which renders services in more than 50 cities internationally, is also the top app industry influencers are consuming. Not surprising, as UberEATS gives foodies the ability to order from local restaurants, track their delivery, and pay through mobile tip included, to avoid last-minute pocket-pulling for change. Big chain brands, such as McDonald’s, are even testing UberEATS as a delivery service. This app truly changed the face of restaurant and hospitality and we’re excited to see how it expands next year. 8 2016 Restaurant

Technology Guide POP, DIGITAL MENU BOARDS, KIOSK If you need a sign that the way your menu looks matters, this is it. Our Digital Signage Editors’ Choice Award Winner, Delphi Display Systems, aims to engage customers with indoor and outdoor technology, and does so using high-quality screens with the most efficient business intelligence systems. Whether it is for a menu screen in-store sitting above the cashier or wrapping around the building at the drive-thru window, Delphi Display Systems showcases each brand’s unique content. But what sets this company apart is that it does more than show it also tells, providing analytics and content management capabilities. Delphi’s proprietary software, Insight Track®, measures real-time service to provide QSRs another look on how to optimize their potential bottlenecks and speed-of-service. Delphi’s Menu Optimizer™ also gives operators a way to see how menu layout changes impact sales performance. MARKETING, CRM, ANALYTICS The

first company that tied as a Marketing, CRM, Analytics Editors’ Choice Award Winner should be familiar to you. Say hello again to our sponsor, Zenreach! Forget clunky Wi-Fi service that doesn’t allow restaurant brands to rein in ROI. This company closes the “online-to-offline loop,” bringing physical commerce activity in-store, all through digital means. With Zenreach, brick-and-mortar businesses can offer guests reliable, custom-branded Wi-Fi through a one-time login. The platform then provides the client customer demographics, audience behavior analytics, and the ability to integrate email marketing, CRM, and customer communications through its systems. Through Zenreach, restaurant and other foodservice establishments will be sure to reach consumers and resonate with them in unprecedented ways. MARKETING, CRM, ANALYTICS Online marketing company Constant Contact, Inc. has a mission to drive big results for small businesses. Recently acquired by Endurance International

Group, a business known for web-hosting, the Constant Contact software focuses on “contact management with less of the ‘management.’” Users can easily upload their email lists from Excel or other major email accounts, while the system handles unsubscribes, bounces, and inactive emails automatically. Its slew of customizable email templates, with an intuitive drag-and-drop function, and its autoresponder that reacts on customer-behavior or milestones (such as birthdays) give clients optimal CRM with minimal effort. Users can also set up a series of emails for their contact lists to keep audiences engaged without having to continually mark the calendar. Aside from its simple user interface and deliverability, its committed, 24/7 customer service makes this brand shine. 2016 Restaurant Technology Guide 9 GUEST FACING Did you know Ziosk started offering “Time Inc.,” “People,” “Sports Illustrated,” and “Entertainment Weekly” magazines for guests to read while

waiting for their meals? That’s right this tableside tablet doesn’t simply maximize efficiency with its 7-inch screen and credit card reader. Ziosk is incorporating entertainment to amplify customers’ dining experiences. Partnering with award-winning companies such as play studio Toca Boca for kid-friendly games, Thuuz Sports for live sports programming and game data, or Fashion Trender for players to participate in an interactive shopping guide and potentially receive retail discounts, Ziosk understands that the restaurant experience goes beyond foodservice. This company made the first ordering, entertainment, and pay-at-the-table tablet and will surely continue to turn heads in the technology space.
