American National Celebrations and Bank Holidays January 1. - New Year’s Day Celebrates beggining of the gregorian calendar year. Festivities include counting down to midnight. Third Monday in January - Martin Luther King”s Day Honors Martin Luther King. Civil Rights leader; combined with other holidays in several states (traditionally January 15.) Martin Luther King was the leader of the black minority's civil rights consitution. Third Monday in February - President’s Day George Washington was the first president of the USA,and he born in 1732 februar 22. Many people now refer to this holiday as "Presidents' Day" and consider it a day honoring all American Presidents. However, neither the Monday Holiday Law nor any subsequent law changed the name of the holiday from Washington's Birthday to Presidents' Day. Last Monday in May - Memorial Day Honors the nation's war dead. July 4 - Independence Day The Independnece Manifestum had been accepted in

1776 j uly 4. They considered this manifestum was the founder document of the USA. First Monday in September - Labor Day Celebrate the achievements of workers and the labor movement. Second Monday in October - Columbus Day Honors Christopher Columbus, traditional discoverer of the Americas. In some areas it is also a celebration of Italian culture and heritage. November 11 - Veterans Day Honors all veterans of the United States armed forces. Fourth Thursday in November - Thanksgiving Day Traditionally celebrates the giving of thanks for the autumn harvest. Americans have a b ig family party at the Thanksgiving dinner, with grandparents, aunts, and uncles. School and offices are closed, and the airports are busy with millions of people going to see their families. This is when they thank God for the good things in their lives and sit at the family table and eat turkey. December 25 - Christmas Day Celebrates the Nativity of Jesus. Some people consider aspects of this religious holiday,

such as giving gifts and decorating a Christmas tree, to be secular rather than explicitly Christian. Other Celebrations There are special festivals in different parts of the States. They show how many different nations came together to make the American Nation. Americans go out to follow the dancing lion ont he Chinese New Year. They listen to bagpipe music and drink whisky on Burns Night, a traditional Scottish festival. The truth is that Americans love parties. But perhaps the best parties of all are private, family ones. Some, like Halloween, are especially for the children At the end of October, they dress up as ghosts or witches and go from house to house asking for candy or cookies. Valentine's Day traditional celebration of love and romance, including the exchange of cards, candy, flowers, and other gifts.
