"Juliet goes Independent:" R&J III:v Explanation Inquiry One of the central issues Shakespeare explores in Romeo and Juliet is Juliets growth from immaturity to independence and womanhood. The exploration reveals not only the strength of love as a catalyst, but also the power of women. Complete the following activities to generate a paragraph which explains Juliets transformation and its meaning. Part I. Inquiry Research Answer the following questions in complete sentences including textual evidence and parenthetical citation. Example: Juliets astrological sign is the Leo: "Come Lammas eve she will be fourteen" (I:iii, 19). This shows that Juliet is young and immature as she is only old enough to be a freshman in high school, and freshmen are very immature. 1. How does Juliet respond to her mother when she tells Juliet that Paris will "make her a joyful bride" Thursday? What does she "wonder" at? 2. How exactly does Juliet respond to her

fathers threat that he will "drag" her to St. Peters church if she refuses to go on her own? (Hint: what does she ask him for on her knees?) 3. Through out Juliets argument with her parents what does she try to get them to do (211)? 4. At the end of the scene who does Juliet decide to break her ties with: Romeo Paris, her Parents, or the Nurse, and why? Part II. Response to Literature Answer the prompt, in a complete paragraph, using standard English. Be sure to begin with a thesis/claim that includes title, author and genre and support that thesis with several references to the text that include textual evidence and parenthetical citations in accordance with MLA guidelines. Also be sure to explain how the support provided demonstrates the claim. Prompt. In III:v of William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, is Juliet still a girl who, lacking experience and maturity, looks to adults to guide her decisions, or is she an independent woman who makes her own decisions and

controls her own emotions? In I:iii of Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is not an independent woman, she is still growing, lacks experience and maturity and she relies on grown-ups to make choices for her. In the play the nurse wants to live long enough to see Juliet get married: “thou wast the prettiest baby that e’er I nursed. An I might live to see thee married once” (I: iii, 64). This shows Juliet is immature because if she was mature enough to get married the nurse would not be worried about living long enough to see her. When Juliet’s mother asks her how she feels about marriage she says it’s not something she considers: “it is a honor that I dream not of” (I: iii, 70). Juliet is immature because she has not even thought about marrige yet. Lady Capulet believes that Juliet should get married because she was married at that age and other girls her age in Verona are already Mothers: “well, think of marriage now, younger than you, already mothers. By

my count, I was your mother upon these years” (I: iii, 73). This is another reason that shows Juliet is immature and inexperienced because she thinks she is too young and the only logical reason her mother has is that everyone else is doing it. When Lady Capulet asks Juliet if she is willing to marry Paris Juliet says she will if he is good looking and her mom tells her to: “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move but no more deep will I endart mine eye than your consent gives strength to make it fly” (I:iii,101). Juliet is not mature enough to make her own decisions, she allows her mother to make them for her. It is also really immature to marry somebody based on looks
