For specific dates and times for your session, including arrival and departure times, see our 2022 session schedules at the end of this document. Student Arrival and Departure Regular students (everyone except work-study students and studio assistants) should arrive between 1:00 p.m and 5:00 pm on the first

Sunday of the workshop (Friday for the weekend session) Your session will begin with an all-school orientation at 5:00 p.m in the Northlight building If you plan to arrive in the area before the first day of your workshop, you will need to make arrangements for off-campus accommodations. All regular students will receive an e-mail containing their housing assignment by 1:00 p.m on their arrival day Rooms are unlocked and ready for you to move in to If you are staying off campus, this email will confirm any meal plan you may have purchased. There will be a welcome tent at the entrance to campus, near The Penland Gallery. During the pandemic we are checking to make sure we have received your proof of vaccination and to help you find your way to your housing and studio. If you have any questions or concerns about your housing assignment or need assistance with your luggage, please call the Staff On-Call Number. All regular students should plan to depart by 10:00 a.m on the day after your

workshop ends (Monday for weekend workshops, Friday for all other sessions). Work-Study Students and Studio Assistants Arrival and Departure Work-study students (WS) and studio assistants (SA) should plan to arrive on Friday evening or Saturday morning in time for their workday, which begins with breakfast at 9:00 a.m (For weekend workshops, studio assistants should plan to arrive on Thursday evening or Friday morning). The first meal for WS is Saturday breakfast. WS and most SA are finished with their work obligation at the end of the workshop and will need to depart campus by 10:00 a.m on the day after their session ends SAs in some studios may have a different departure schedule. Traveling to Penland Detailed information about traveling to Penland is available on our website, where you will find driving directions and information about air travel, rental cars, area accommodations, and a list of shuttle services that can provide transportation from the airport. What to Bring The

studio supplies needed for your workshop will be on your Studio Materials List, which is available in your student portal about six weeks before your workshop begins. This list suggests supplies and tools to bring from home. You are also welcome to bring any small tools, PPE and other safety gear, or special materials you would like to have with you during your workshop, and be sure to bring clothes and footwear that are appropriate for your studio work. 2 Our mountain weather can vary dramatically, so we suggest bringing warm clothes and rain gear, as well as enough clothing to see you through the sessionthe nearest laundry facilities are in the town of Spruce Pine, a 15-minute drive. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended as the terrain at Penland is uneven and includes stone steps and walkways that can be slippery when wet. You will likely also want a flashlight to help navigate our campus at night. Penland supplies bedding, towels, and soap to all students, as well

as fans, earplugs, and blankets upon request. You may want to bring a sleeping bag or quilt as it can get cold in any season Basic toiletries and other sundries like bug repellant are available for purchase in our supply store if you forget to pack anything. If you want to ship a package ahead of time, you can address it to yourself, care of Penland School of Craft, noting the workshop and session you are in. Plan your shipment so that your package arrives as close as possible to the Friday before your session. Please use the Penland addresses found in the mail section of this handbook. Parking Please see our campus map for places to park when you arrive. There is always plenty of parking behind the Penland Gallery, which is a short walk from the main campus. Please do not park in front of any dumpsters, in designated accessible spaces, in the loading ramp behind The Pines Dining Hall, or on the grass. Accessibility Penland’s campus is located on uneven terrain that poses

accessibility challenges. ADA-compliant housing is available on request. We have accessible parking places in key areas of campus (see our accessible housing and parking map) and several golf carts are available and can be requested by students who may need them to navigate campus. Textiles workshops are taught in second- and third-floor walk-up studios; one of the metals studios has stairs that compromise access. Stair lifts are installed in these studios We are working on campus improvements that will soon provide universal access to all our studios. While we try our best to accommodate all students, our current campus setting will not be accessible for everyone. We look forward to speaking with you about what we can offer and see if our campus will work for you and your needs. Please let us know in advance what support you may need by contacting the registrar (registrar@penland.org) to discuss housing and access to studios and other facilities When You Arrive If you arrive on

campus with time to spare, you might want to visit the Penland Gallery, the Penland Supply Store, and the Penland Coffee House. You may also visit your studio You can drop off your supplies, but please do not claim a specific workspace until the class first meets with the instructor and studio staff on Sunday evening. If you have questions concerning your housing assignment you can speak with the greeter in the welcome tent or the main office staff on the day of your arrival or see the registrar beginning on Monday morning. Please do not change rooms without approval from the registrar 3 Campus Life and Session Events Daily Life at Penland For most people, studio activities occupy most of their time and attention. Penland studios are open 24 hours a day (except the hot-glass and flame shops). Workshop structure varies depending on the instructor, but in general there is a balance between demonstrations, formal instruction, and open studio time, often supplemented with slide shows,

group projects, and field trips. Outside of the studio there are lots of other things happening on campus during a session, including evening artist talks, visits to nearby studios, an on-campus coffee house, volleyball games, gallery exhibits, bonfires, and hikes. Campus often remains active at all hours, but we do have official quiet hours, from 11:00 p.m to 7:00 am, when we ask everyone to be especially mindful of noise Meals Penland provides excellent, nutritious meals made with fresh ingredients. While we can’t cater to every individual diet we do have a large, varied menu. There is always a vegetarian option and each dish is labeled to help people with other dietary restrictionssuch as vegan or wheat freenavigate the meals and find plenty to eat. Lunch and dinner include an extensive salad bar, and certain items, such as fresh fruit and cereal, are always available. If you have any questions about our food service please contact the Penland kitchen at

foodservicesmgr@penland.org If you have any questions about signing up for a meal plan please contact our registrar at registrar@penland.org Students staying on campus have paid for all meals as part of their room and board charge. 4 Students who are not on a meal plan can purchase meals in the dining hall, but they must make reservations 24 hours in advance by emailing pinesreservations@penland.org or calling the kitchen at (828) 765-7942. Meal tickets may be purchased with cash, check, or credit card in the supply store The Pines Dining Hall is not open to guests or visitors; soup, sandwiches, and snacks are available for purchase at the coffee house. Meal times are as follows: MONDAY–FRIDAY Breakfast: 8:00–8:45 a.m Lunch: 12:30–1:00 p.m (1:15 pm in summer) Dinner: 6:15–7:00 p.m SATURDAY–SUNDAY Breakfast: 9:00–9:45 a.m Lunch: 12:30–1:00 p.m (1:15 pm in summer) Dinner: 6:15–7:00 p.m Slides On many evenings during your time at Penland there will be artist

presentations by the sessions instructors, and sometimes other local artists such as Penland’s resident artists, core fellows, visiting artists, and staff. These events are held in the Northlight social hall, beginning at 8:15 pm, and typically last no more than one hour. They are a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the careers and studio practices of all the amazing artists that come to Penland. Movement During most workshops, Penland offers movement classes, usually some variety of yoga, to help students balance their studio work with some guided and restorative physical exercise. These classes are taught by hired teachers in the summer and by qualified work-study students during concentration, so the style of class varies with the different instructors. Movement classes take place each weekday at 7:00 am and 5:00 p.m *Note: during the pandemic, the movement program may be paused or modified. Local Artist Studios There are so many talented artists in the Penland area and

you might want to take some time to visit their studios during your time here. A map of area studios can be found here Closer to home, Penland’s resident artists host an open house in their studios each session where you can view their work and their studio environment, as well as chat with these talented makers who come to live and work at Penland for three years. And right down the road, a short walk from Penland campus, Cynthia and Edwina Bringlelocal potter and textile artist, respectivelyalso host an open house during most sessions. Penland’s Past and Future – A Conversation with the Director Each session we invite students and instructors who would like more information about Penland and the vision for its future to join a presentation and conversation with our executive director. This event takes place once towards the middle of each session, and will be listed on our calendars and communication during your workshop. 5 Studio Clean-Up and Departure Studio clean-up is

part of your workshop and it is important that everyone participates. It will typically occur before Show & Tell (or Studio Stroll for shorter sessions). If you must depart campus before studio clean-up, please check with the studio coordinator to see how you can help before you leave. Please see our session schedules for exact departure times for your session. It is important that you depart on time, as our staff will need to prepare the campus for the next activities. If you experience difficulties with your departure plans, please contact a member of the Penland staff as soon as possible so they can help you find other local accommodations. Show & Tell and Studio Stroll At the end of most sessions students are invited to gather in one place and show their work for Show & Tell. It is a chance to see what everyone has been working on during the session, have discussions about the workshop, and sometimes to trade or purchase work from other students. If you are coming for

a shorter class, a weekend workshop or one of our special sessions in the fall or spring, your workshop will be followed by a Studio Stroll, where all students and instructors display their work in their studio and everyone is invited to travel through the studios and enjoy the work produced during the session. Scholarship Auction At the end of most sessions there is an auction of student and instructor work to benefit our scholarship programs. (There is no auction during shorter sessions) Auctions are held at the Northlight social hall at 6 8:00 p.m These auctions are celebratory and entertaining, and they raise a significant amount of money to enable scholarship students to attend Penland. If you would like to contribute a piece of your work to the auction, you will receive directions for how to deliver your donations on the day of the event. Communication and Calendars With all of the activities on campus you might be worried you’ll miss some of them, but we have some simple

ways to communicate with you about what’s going on each day. The first is the large announcement board in The Pines Dining Hall. Each day this chalkboard is updated (and often artistically decorated) with details of the day’s events like slides, open houses, any impromptu activities, as well as the hours of movement and the open hours of the supply store, gallery, and coffee house. This information is also written on the dry erase board outside of the main office. The other way to keep track of events on campus is the Penland events calendar, which is found on our website and on your student portal. Additionally, we will print paper versions of the calendar, which are available outside of the main office. Penland Facilities and Services Guest Services If you have any problems or need any assistance during your time at Penland you can ask any staff member for help. The simplest way to contact our staff, though, is by sending an e-mail to guestservices@penland.org This ensures that

your request makes it to the right person and is the best way to let us know if you need anything, if you have a question about campus, or if something isn’t 7 working right. You will receive an e-mail confirmation of your request and staff will follow up with you to make sure the issue is resolved to the best of our ability, typically within 24 hours. Main Office The main office is located in the Lily Loom building and is the administrative center of Penland’s operations. The office is staffed during business hours and is a resource for everyone on campus who has any issues or questions. It is also where our registration staff work They can help you sign up for a class or help address any issues you may have with your housing. Housing We recommend staying on campus to get the most out of your Penland experience. There are frequent evening events and many people choose to do studio work late at night or early in the morning. Penland housing is quite simple. Buildings are not

air-conditionedthe climate is moderate and you can count on cooler temperatures at night. Furnishing is basic: a bed and a place to put your clothes Housing assignments are first come, first served. We cannot accommodate requests for specific housing, but we do have ADA-compliant, accessible housing for those who need it. Please contact the registrar (registrar@penland.org) if you need accessible housing Housing at Penland is limited, so we cannot offer accommodations for your guests. Linens Penland provides sheets, blankets, towels, washcloths, and soap, although you are welcome to bring your own. If you would like fresh sheets and towels, an extra blanket, a fan, etc please send an e-mail request to guestservices@penland.org Laundry Penland’s water supply is limited, so we are unable to provide laundry facilities, but there is a laundromat in Spruce Pine, a 15-minute drive. Fresh sheets and towels are available any time by request Phones Verizon and U.S Cellular cell phones work

best at Penland; other services may not have reception During your studio orientation you will learn where the nearest landline is to your studio in case of an emergency. Additionally, there is a landline outside the main office that students may use to make domestic calls. Internet Free, public-access WiFi is available throughout campus, including all studios and housing. Mail and Shipping We have daily USPS, UPS, and FedEx service Monday through Friday. You can weigh and pay for UPS packages in the supply store, which is also where incoming UPS and FedEx Ground packages are delivered. FedEx Express and USPS packages can be shipped from the main office in the Lily Loom building. Incoming USPS mail for students is sorted into alphabetically ordered cubbies outside the main office, and outgoing mail can be deposited in the labeled box beneath the cubbies. Stamps are available in the supply store, or you can visit Penland’s historic one-room post office just down the road. To send

and receive mail, please use these addresses: 8 USPS: PO Box 37, Penland, NC 28765 UPS/FedEx: 2687 Conley Ridge Road, Bakersville, NC 28705 Supply Store The Penland Supply Store is an on-campus shop that sells Penland merchandise, handmade gifts, books, and other supplies that you may want during your stay, including toiletries and other necessities. It also sells a selection of art supplies, tools, and safety gear that you can use to supplement what you brought from home or what is available in your studio. Supplies will vary because we often order materials specifically requested by instructors for their students, but to get a better idea of the typical inventory please see the supply store web page. Coffee House The Penland Coffee House is located next to The Pines Dining Hall and serves coffee, espresso drinks, teas, cold drinks, fresh baked goods, and sandwiches. Its hours vary seasonally, but it opens most days at 9:00 a.m Gallery and Visitors Center Our gallery and

visitors center is located in Horner Hall, recognizable by the large Hoss Haley steel sculpture on the south lawn. The gallery offers a number of special exhibitions throughout the year as well as an ongoing display of work for sale by current and former instructors, resident artists, and other Penland-affiliated artists. The Visitor Center Gallery space provides information about the history of the school and current programs. Hours vary throughout the year and are posted on the gallery’s web page. 9 Emergency and Safety Information Emergency Procedures In the event of an emergency, students should call 911 if appropriate and should get in touch with a staff member as soon as possible. The easiest way to do this is to call Penland’s Staff On-Call Number: (828) 358-4586, which is posted in all studios and all housing. Medical Emergencies Penland does not have a first responder or an EMT on staff. Penlands policy is to contact 911 in the event of any medical emergency.

Automatic electronic defibrillators are located in the Lily Loom building, the Pines, the gallery, and the glass studio, and first-aid kits are placed in all studios and high-traffic areas. Students and instructors are asked to voluntarily provide emergency contact information at the start of the workshop. Due to privacy laws, Penland cannot share any information about a student except, in cases of emergency, with someone listed by that student as their emergency contact. Penland does not administer any form of injectable adrenaline (epinephrine). If you have a known allergy to foods, stings, environmental items, or other products we encourage you to bring a personal supply of any necessary medication. For mental health emergencies Penland relies on Mobile Crisis Management, a state-wide service which provides on-site response and intervention. Medical Care There are a number of medical and mental health resources in our area and Penland staff can help you connect with them. The Blue

Ridge Regional Hospital and the My Care Now walk-in clinic are both in Spruce Pine, a 15-minute drive away, and the Mountain Community Health Partners health clinic, in Bakersville, also fifteen minutes away, offers medical services on a sliding scale for those without insurance. Studio Safety Penland prides itself on introducing students of all levels to craft techniques and tools. No matter your experience level, it is required that you attend the studio safety orientation at the start of your workshop, that you follow all the safety guidelines established by our studio staff, and that you follow at the pace of instruction and do not try to use tools that have not been introduced in your workshop. Incident Report Penland is committed to providing a safe environment for all students, staff, and visitors. In the event of an injury or any incident that raises concern for the safety and well-being of anyone on campus, we ask that you let us know by filling out our confidential incident

report, which goes to the executive director. Inherent Risks While Penland is a safety-conscious institution and safety information is part of every workshop, it is impossible to eliminate the risks that accompany the use of certain tools, equipment, and materials. By participating in Penland workshops and activities, you assume responsibility for the inherent risks involved. It is every student’s responsibility to understand safe practices and the inherent risks, and to follow the guidance of studio staff and instructors, before using any tool, machine, or material. Before beginning a workshop, you must sign the Assumption of Inherent Risk and Consent form in your student 10 portal, acknowledging that you understand and accept these risks associated with working in Penland’s studios. Student Conduct and Other Policies Personal Property Penland is not responsible for the personal property of students, instructors, or staff and does not provide insurance covering such

property. Studios and housing remain unlocked at all times (bedrooms with four or fewer inhabitants can be locked from the inside). Some of the studios have lockable storage available, and there are lockers available to all in a few locations on campus. You may bring your own lock or rent or purchase one at the school store. as well as the misuse of prescription medication, on campus. Anyone found using, selling, or possessing illegal substances on Penland premises will be dismissed without a refund. If you prefer not to be photographed for this purpose, please let the photographer know. When taking your own pictures of people or their work, please do so with their consent. Pets Students are not permitted to bring pets to Penland. Visitors may walk dogs on Penland’s campus, but they must remain on a leash at all times. Firearms and Other Weapons Firearms or facsimiles thereof are not permitted on Penland campus.

Additionally, though the line between a weapon and a tool can sometimes be a fine one (knives, for instance, are used in many studio practices), items determined by Penland staff to be weapons are not permitted on Penland campus. Camping Camping is not permitted on the Penland campus. 11 Unacceptable Behavior Penland reserves the right to dismiss any student, without refund, for behavior that is disruptive to the community learning and living environment.
