Timing/Balancer Belt and Water Pump Replacement Timing/Balancer Belt Removal 1. Remove Strut Brace 2. Remove engine cover 3. Remove air intake duct and cleaner housing assembly 4. Loosen the mounting bolt, lock bolt and adjusting rod, then remove alternator belt 5. Loosen idler pulley center nut and adjusting bolt, then remove A/C compressor belt 6. Remove the TCS upper and lower brackets 7. Loosen the adjusting bolt, locknut and mounting bolt, then remove the P/S pump belt 8. Disconnect the TCS throttle sensor, throttle actuator, and the TP sensor connectors, then remover the TCS control valve assembly. 9. Disconnect the VSS sub-harness connector and remove the wire harness holder 10. Remove the breather hose and vacuum hoses 11. Remove the upper radiator hose 12. Remove the vacuum hoses and the ICM bracket 13. Remove the idler pulley bracket, dipstick and tube 14. Remove the six ignition coils from cylinder head covers 15. Remove spark plugs 16. Turn No 1 piston to TDC 17. Remove the

crankshaft pulley 18. Remove the upper and lower covers 19. Loosen the balancer belt adjuster bolt 180○ Push the tensioner to remove tension from the balancer belt, the retighten the adjusting bolt. 20. Remove the balancer belt 21. Loosen the timing belt adjusting bolt 180○ Push the tensioner to remove tension from the timing belt, then retighten the adjusting bolt. 22. Remove the timing belt Timing Belt/Balancer Belt Installation 23. Remove the balancer belt drive pulley and timing belt guide plate 24. Set the timing belt drive pulley so that the No 1 piston is at TDC Align the TDC mark on the timing belt drive pulley with the point on the oil pump. 25. Clean the camshaft pulleys 26. Set the camshaft pulleys so that the No 1 piston is at TDC Align the TDC marks with on the camshaft pulleys to the pointers on the back covers. 27. Install the timing belt around the timing belt drive pulley first, then the adjusting pulley, then the left camshaft pulley, then the water pump pulley,

then the right camshaft pulley. 28. Loosen and retighten the timing belt adjusting bolt to tension the timing belt, 29. Install the lower cover and crankshaft pulley 30. Rotate the crankshaft pulley 5 or 6 turns clockwise so the timing belt positions on the pulleys. 31. Adjust timing belt tension a. Set the No 1 piston to TDC b. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise ten teeth on the camshaft pulley (The blue mark of the crankshaft pulley should line up with the point on the lower cover) c. Loosen the timing belt adjusting bolt 180○ d. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 31 lb*ft. 32. Remove the crankshaft pulley and lower cover 33. Install the timing belt guide plate and balancer belt drive pulley 34. Align the maintenance hole and the balancer shaft hole 35. Insert a 6mm bolt that is at least 45mm long into the balancer shaft 36. Check alignment of the pointers 37. Set the timing belt so that the No 1 piston is at TDC 38. Install the balancer belt drive pulley, then install the

balancer belt 39. Loosen and retighten the balancer belt adjusting bolt to tension the balancer belt 40. Remover the 6mm bolt Install the sealing bolt in the maintenance hole Use a new washer. 41. Install the crankshaft pulley, then rotate the crankshaft pulley 5 or 6 turns clockwise so the timing belt positions on the pulleys. 42. Adjust balancer belt tension a. Set the No 1 piston to TDC b. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 1 turn c. Loosen the balancer belt adjusting bolt 180○ d. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 33 lb*ft. 43. Remove crankshaft pulley 44. Install the upper and lower covers, then reinstall the crankshaft pulley 45. Check that the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys are at TDC 46. Follow steps 1-16 in reverse order Replace spark plugs Hopefully the car starts!!
