I cannot agree with the argument that graffiti is a legitimate form of expression. I agree that it may be art because almost anything can be considered art. However, it is not respectful of others and it defaces property. The difference between graffiti and acceptable art is permission obtained by the artist. When people draw graffiti on the property of others it

becomes a violation of property rights. It lowers property value and is very expensive to clean up. Do you want your tax dollars being spent to clean up other people's personal expressions on city buildings and walls? Would you want someone expressing their feelings on your very own private property? I believe that our right to freedom of speech should be protected; however, it should not be done at the expense of other citizens’ rights. The fact that gangs use graffiti to "express themselves" is another reason why I do not agree that graffiti should be an accepted art form. Graffiti written by gangs is often used to intimidate others, recruit new members, advertise the sale of drugs, and mark gang boundaries. When we try to justify graffiti we are only encouraging further criminal gang related activity. I am a true art lover. This is why I have to disagree when defenders of graffiti argue that graffiti should be considered beautiful art that should be accepted. The

buildings and other structures that graffiti artists write on are also art and were not meant by the designer to have personal expressions painted all over them. If graffiti artists would like to display their works then they should display them in museums or on legal graffiti walls. These have been set up by the government to try to deter rampant and illegal graffiti throughout our cities. If the public would like to see their art then they will go see it in places where it will not be destructive to others. Much of the graffiti today is vulgar and offensive, and not appropriate for children to view. However, it is difficult not to be exposed to it when it is available all over cities. This x-ray vision was at one time known as 'water witching', but nowadays is more commonly called water divining or dowsing. Derosiers had often suffered from acute pains under his lower ribs. In 1940, the attacks started to occur more frequently, convincing him that he needed to visit a doctor. The doctor thought he would be cured by rest and prescribed him

sleeping pills, and indeed, this appeared to work for a while. After he'd been taking the pills for about a month, Derosiers visited a cousin's farm in Quebec. The relative complained that a lack of water was pushing him out of the cattle business, and although he felt sorry about the situation, Derosiers could do nothing. A few months later, while the two men were walking across a field behind the barns, Derosiers got one of his awful pains in the ribs. As it was happening, he said to his cousin: 'Don't ask me why I say this, for I can't explain it - but I feel that I am standing over a stream of underground water . good water. It is seventy feet down and it runs over the top of a layer of slate three inches thick. Don't drill through the slate or you will lose the water' Three weeks later, the well was drilled in the place Derosiers had indicated using his mental x-ray, and an abundant supply of drinkable water was discovered only a foot deeper

than he had specified. Underneath the water was a layer of slate three to four inches thick. News of this miraculous 'water witching' spread quickly and Derosiers found his x-ray vision very much in demand. He found over six hundred wells, without failure, simply by walking over the land and stopping where he felt the stabbing pain in his ribs. TASK 2 The English word 'communicate' comes from the Latin word 'communicare'. It means 'to give' or 'to share'. And, most commonly today, it means to give or share information and ideas If there are no people around us, we don't learn how to communicate. There have been several cases where children have been discovered, unable to speak a human language, after years of living alone or with animals. We don't know, of course, whether the children who lived with the animals were able to communicate with them, but when they were discovered they certainly couldn't communicate with

humans. In 1920, in India, for example, two young girls were found living in the wilds. People said that wolves had looked after them. They couldn't speak In 1970 a boy called Genie was found in a room. He was 14 and he had been living alone in a room since he was 14 months old The people who were responsible for him had given him very little food and had never talked to him. Genie had to learn how to speak when he was taken away from these people Another interesting example is the case when a boy was found in the forest in Central Africa in 1976. He had been living with monkeys; he walked on his hands and feet and climbed like a monkey. It is not surprising that he couldn't speak either Speaking and understanding are complicated even if you have been brought up in a home rather than in a desert. We might know a language very well, but can we always express ourselves so that another person can understand what we are trying to communicate? People who share the same experiences

and interests often develop their own language. This language helps them to communicate better and, at the same time, makes it more difficult for other people to take part. In English there are now over one million words. The average American person knows between 30,000 and 60,000 words. We may speak
