Before leaving home, you need to choose the classes you want to attend and prepare your learning agreement together with your programme coordinator. Information on the degree courses and classes offered can be found at the following address: http://www.enguniboit/PortaleEn/Academic+programmes/Teachin gs/default.htm?tab=Facolta Students on exchange programmes are usually guaranteed full academic recognition of their study period abroad, since the academic credits earned at partner universities are considered to be equivalent to those at the home institutions. In order to obtain this recognition, you will need to have your Learning Agreement approved by your home university before your departure. If you need to make

any changes to the courses you have chosen, please remember that you must have these approved again by your home coordinator. ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) ECTS was developed by the European Community as a means of measuring and comparing learning achievements in order to transfer them from one institution to another. It facilitates student mobility and academic exchange between European universities, especially 2 Source: http://www.doksinet within the frame of the ERASMUS programme. ECTS makes it easier to compare degree course structures, study requirements and individual course units between universities. (1 Italian credit “CFU” = 1 ECTS). THE ITALIAN SYSTEM IN BRIEF Degree programmes in Italian Universities are based on a 3-cycle system: -first-cycle degrees: "Lauree" (LA), 3 years, 180 credits; -second-cycle degrees: "Lauree Magistrali “(LM), 2 years, 120 credits. Pursuant to EU regulations, only a few degrees like the ones in Architecture (the

"Lauree magistrali a ciclo unico" ) are exceptional cases and are based on a one-cycle system, with students having to study for 5 or 6 years and earn 300/360 credits respectively. Finally, third-cycle degrees include "Dottorati di ricerca" and "Scuole di specializzazione". In the Italian university system, Schools (formerly known as Faculties) organise the academic activities of the degree programmes (the "corsi di studio"). When choosing a degree programme, prospective students should look at the academic offer of each School and Campus. Departments ("Dipartimenti") are financial and administrative units within which professors and research fellows carry out their research 3 Source: http://www.doksinet activities: Departments have the primary aim of promoting and organising research (including third-cycle programmes for doctoral studies) an define degree programmes. The University of Bologna has 11 Schools, each of which offers a

wide range of LA and LM degrees. Examinations are graded according to a scale ranging from 0 to 30, with 18 as a pass mark. A "cum laude" may be added to the highest grade (30; 30 e lode) as a mention of special distinction.
