Business Communication in the Workplace Course Description: The course introduces participants to the basic formats and principles of business conversation. The course covers the analysis of audience, purpose, and message, as well as gives participants the opportunity to compose memos, letters, and informal reports for a variety of work situations. The course will also aim to develop the ability to communicate effectively through reading, listening, speaking and writing as well as the following: • • • • • To develop the ability to solve problems by collecting, organizing and evaluating information in business situation. To develop an understanding and appreciation of diversity among cultures, including respect for various ways of viewing the business world today. To explain the importance of communication to participants and to their business. To explain the process of communication among nowadays business people. To describe the formal and informal communication in the

business organization. Course Outline: • Effective Communication   • Identify the five elements of the communication cycle. Name potential communication barriers and explain how barriers influence the communication cycle. The Six Cs of Effective Messages      Revise messages to reflect courtesy and clarity. Apply techniques that ensure concise messages. Make messages concrete by providing specific information. Review messages for correct content, mechanics, and appearance. Determine whether a message meets the completeness criteria of who, what, when, where, why, and how. • • • Good News and Neutral News Messages: Identify situations for which the good news strategy is appropriate Bad News Messages: Analyze bad news messages to verify that they reflect the six Cs of effective messages. Persuasive Messages: Discuss situations when persuasion may be necessary. Prepare effective persuasive messages. At the end of this course the participants will

be able to: By the end of this course, participants will have demonstrated that they can consistently do the following: • • • • • • Adopt a positive professional attitude as demonstrated by positive involvement (courtesy, attentiveness, and substantial participation in group activities) and effective time management. Identify the audience and purpose in common business conversation situations and create effective responses; Choose the appropriate format for any situation and communicate effectively in that format. (Situations may require spoken or written responses and the use of electronic communications tools.); Compose, and edit documents that are readable, grammatically and mechanically sound, and appropriate in tone; Respond appropriately to written or spoken instructions, requests, and questions; Write and present persuasively in order to market or sell ideas, products, or services; and conduct research and incorporate source material into written assignments
