Use your own words as much as possible. A Sinking Airport One of the

world’s most advanced airports could sink beneath the sea within ten years, according to a new report. Kansai airport, built at a cost of £116billion on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, Japan, has already sunk nearly 4ft since it was opened in 1994. At the time it was built, huge amounts of sand and rock were poured into the water and a road bridge was built to take passengers to the mainland. Now, a report published in a Japanese magazine predicts it will sink a further 5ft over the next eight years - enough to mean the main runway would be underwater at high tide. This could be a real problem for Osaka’s bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games, for which it is otherwise thought to be in the lead with a very strong chance. The report has been taken so seriously that nine airlines have already stopped using the airport and a further sixteen have decided to cut their flights. But Japanese engineers say they have come up with a brilliant solution - a runway which floats on the water!

Floating platforms have already been tested in Tokyo Bay, although at present they are too small to take large passenger aircraft. Kansai is the most expensive airport in the world for airlines to use. Every time a jumbo jet touches down, its owners have to pay £6000. Even so, the airport is in trouble They owe billions of pounds in debt and are fighting to survive. For some reason, they are planning to build new runways and terminal buildings on the island by the year 2007, even though many people seriously doubt if they’ll ever be used. [Source: adapted from Metro, 19.1000, p20] All the answers should be based on information given in the text. QUESTIONS 1. How certain is it that the island will sink? 2. What has made them think the island will sink? 3. Why should this affect Osaka’s chances of hosting the Olympic Games? 4. What effects has the news had on airline companies? Flying Solo C olumn inches analysing the perils and purpose of adventure holidays may be a natural reaction to some well-publicised recent disasters. But all the words in the world won’t alter the need for the human spirit to stretch itself. For graduate Polly Vacher, there came a moment when her decision to fly a single engine aircraft solo across the Atlantic might easily have ended in death. She knew bad weather was closing in behind her and that if she landed, as planned, in Greenland, she would be stuck for several days. She decided to fly on to Iceland. But as two instrument lights failed, darkness fell, and the deteriorating conditions threatened to coat the plane’s wings in deadly ice, Polly says she had never been so afraid in her life. She flew blind, and as low over the

uninhabited northern wasteland as she dared, to reduce the risk of ice clawing the plane from the night sky, swearing all the while that if she got through this alive, she would never make such a misjudgment again. That resolve is soon to be tested when Polly sets out on a new challenge later this year: to fly solo around the world and into the record books as the smallest aircraft, flown solo by a woman, to circumnavigate the world via the Pacific. But this time she will carry responsibility for something more than her own safety, having pledged to raise enough sponsorship money to fund a scholarship enabling people with disabilities to experience the same surge of sheer adrenaline which comes from skimming cloud tops and seeing sights which are hidden to the earthbound. “For people with disabilities,” says Polly, “a flying scholarship offers them an intellectual and physical challenge at which they never remotely believed they could succeed and helps them gain in confidence and

self-esteem. Up there in the sky they are as free as anyone else” [Source: adapted from Open Eye, edition 2000, p. 32] All the answers should be based on information given in the text but you should try to use your own words as far as possible.
